It’s Not Okay to Be Away
Regular school attendance is one of the most important factors contributing to a student’s learning, wellbeing and future success. During Term 3 we have noticed that students have been taking more time away from school, turning up late to school, and some parents have regularly been picking up students at lunchtime. All of this contributes to interrupting the continuity of learning for a student and makes it more difficult for a student to meet the daily demands of an educational program. It also places significant social pressures on them as they become more disconnected from their peers.
The message is simple: It’s Not Okay to Be Away.
Coming to school every day gives students the best possible opportunity to learn, grow and achieve their goals. Each day builds on the learning from the day before. When students are regularly absent, they can miss important explanations, classroom discussions, assessment preparation and opportunities to practise essential skills. Even occasional absences can quickly add up and make it more difficult for students to keep up with their classmates.
School is also about much more than academic learning. It is where students build friendships, develop confidence, learn to work with others and establish positive relationships with teachers and their peers. Being present allows students to participate fully in the school community, including sport, excursions, performances, assemblies, clubs, leadership opportunities and other activities that contribute to a positive school experience.
Regular attendance also helps students develop important habits for their future. Turning up on time, being prepared, meeting commitments and persevering when things are challenging are valuable skills that students will carry with them into further education, training, employment and adult life.
We understand that there are genuine reasons why students sometimes need to be away from school. Students should stay home when they are unwell, and families may occasionally experience circumstances that prevent attendance. However, where there is no valid reason to be absent, coming to school should be the priority.
Parents and carers play an important role in supporting good attendance. Establishing consistent morning routines, discussing the importance of attendance and encouraging students to attend even when they may not feel particularly motivated can make a significant difference.
Every day is an opportunity to learn something new, strengthen a friendship, ask a question, overcome a challenge, contribute to the school community and take another step towards achieving personal goals.
When students attend regularly, they are not simply ticking a box—they are investing in themselves.
So, let’s make everyday count - It’s Not Okay to Be Away
