Mathematics

Our Year 3 maths focused on learning all about different 3D shapes and identifying their names, features and real-life examples. 

Throughout this unit, students learned to:

• Identify different 3D shapes and link to real-world examples
• Identify the features of each 3D shape included faces, curved surfaces, edges and vertices
• Look at similarities and differences between shapes
• Draw different 3D shapes including cube, cylinder and cuboid

We have also been looking at locating and describing objects using spatial language and comparing the difference between 2D maps, aerial photographs and the actual environment. 

Throughout this learning, students have:

• Built 3D shapes using unifix and been able to describe and change the shape using spatial language
• Give and follow directional instructions such as clockwise, anticlockwise, left, right, North, South, East and West
• Mark and locate grid points
• Analyse and explain the differences between grids, aerial images, 2D maps, and birds eye view

Inquiry

Over the last few weeks, our students have been continuing to learn about different cultural celebrations and traditions from around the world. As part of our unit"Where We Are in Place and Time", students are developing an understanding of how celebrations help people express their culture, beliefs and history. 

Ramadan

Students learned about Ramadan, an Islam celebration of the first reveal of the Quran and symbolises the holiest month in the Islamic calendar. We explored when Ramadan happens, all about fasting, breaking the fast and the important Iftar meal that is shared when breaking the fast. Students then designed their very own Iftar meal that they would enjoy after fasting, and made sure to include a range of food groups including fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy. 

Hanukkah

Students also investigated Hanukkah, a eight-day Jewish celebration known as the Festival of Lights. We explored what Hanukkah is, why it is celebrated and how it is celebrated. We explored its unique timing, as it varies each year and is based on the Hebrew calendar which use the moon and sun to guide it. The moral of Hanukkah is that small acts of resilience and hope, can overcome darkness and tough times. To cement our learning, the students completed a reflection activity where they needed to think about challenges they've faced in their own lives and how they overcame them by being resilient. 

Grade 3 students were then asked to select one of the cultural celebrations we have learnt about, to research and create a information poster about. They have been doing a great job of collecting information and collating it into interesting and easy-to-read sections. We look forward to seeing their finished posters!

Literacy

Over the past two weeks in English, we have been linking our learning to book week and students have been developing their reading comprehension strategies and understanding of persuasive texts, news reports and writing postcards. 

Reading

As part of Book Week, students explored the text 'Tiwi in Paris' from Wongutha Tales, learning to identify and answer who, what and where questions before, during and after reading. Students have been practising understanding 'the gist' of a reading passage and finding evidence in the text to support their answers. Students also explored inferential comprehension questions related to the text, through discussing 'why' questions.

Writing

In writing, students spent time looking at the structure of persuasive writing, identifying key arguments, identifying language features and writing rhetorical questions and fun facts. Throughout these lessons, students read and analysed different persuasive texts, by identifying the writer's key arguments, structuring and ordering the text in the correct way and analysing important persuasive language devices such as emotive language, rhetorical questions and modal verbs. 

During Book Week, students continued their work on the text 'Tiwi in Paris' and used their reading comprehension questions to help write a news report and postcard. 

The news report focused on asking for information about the missing character and students had the opportunity to read their news reports to the class, pretending to be a news reporter on the TV. Students also wrote postcards from the character Glen, telling someone about all the adventures they went on. The students really enjoyed exploring different text types throughout these lessons and using their creativity!
