Level 1: Connect

Hello Level 1 families,

We are on the slippery slope to the end of term and we are so proud of our students for their hard work and drive to succeed. We hope you had a wonderful time if you made it to the Book Week parade - the costumes were fabulous - well done! 

Students have put so much effort into their autobiographies as part of our writing unit. Hopefully you got to see them if you visited the classroom after the parade but if not, they will be coming home towards the last week of term.

Literacy

Reading and Writing

This week, students will be reading 'Little People, Big Dreams - Greta Thunberg' and continuing to learn what a biography consists of as well as exploring themes of inspiration, passion and a drive for change. Students will be asking questions, summarising and finding the main idea of each section. 

Bouncing off of the amazing autobiography work, students will be summarising their writing and presenting oral reports to their classmates. This will provide opportunities to practise speaking confidently and engaging an audience, as well as the vital skills of listening respectfully and purposefully. Perhaps ask your child to speak to you at home about it to increase their confidence. 

In Week 10, we will analyse a range of animal information reports. Students will create a mini-book or poster on an animal of their choosing, including such facts as diet, appearance and behaviour which will wrap up our information report writing wonderfully. 

Core Literacy

Students are involved in Core Literacy lessons every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. 

During these lessons, students engage in many activities relating to spelling, phonics and morphology (how words are formed and how they relate to each other) such as dictation, editing, card deck and reading words.

Each week we have a sound/letter focus and a morphology focus.

During each of these sessions, students have a text that corresponds to their reading level that is read daily. These texts go home with the student every Friday for hopefully extra practise at home.

Maths

Over the past fortnight, our Grade 1 mathematicians have been working hard and showing fantastic learning! We have been learning to measure and tell the time, as well as identify, continue and create number patterns. It has been wonderful to see students confidently apply their understanding and explain their mathematical thinking.

Over the next fortnight, we will continue building our number knowledge by learning to:

• Locate numbers to 100 on a 100 chart.
• Locate numbers to 100 on a number line.
• Apply ‘one more’ and ‘one less’ to solve problems.
• Use our place value knowledge to solve mathematical problems.

We are looking forward to continuing to build our confidence, mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills! 

Inquiry

Following on from the students' interest and enjoyment in our geography focus last term, our Term 3 Inquiry focus is all about Australian History.

By the end of this unit, students will:

• Understand that Aboriginal Peoples were the first to explore and settle Australia, using knowledge of land, water, and seasons.
• Know that Aboriginal People already lived on the land before Europeans arrived, and that their knowledge systems mapped Country in different ways.
• Describe how early settlers in Sydney Town faced challenges with farming, water, and food, and how Arthur Phillip helped the colony survive.
• Recognise that Bass and Flinders mapped the coastline and discovered Bass Strait, helping future travel and trade.
