Book Week 

What a fantastic Book Week celebration! We loved seeing our students arrive in an amazing array of costumes, bringing some of their favourite book characters to life. The creativity and effort that went into the costumes was wonderful to see and made for a very colourful day across the school.

A definite highlight was a surprise visit from the Big Bad Wolf and the Three Little Pigs! There was something very familiar about that wolf… although we just couldn’t quite put our finger on it!

It was a wonderful celebration of books, characters and the joy of reading, and a great way to celebrate the stories that capture our imaginations.

RCYCL Incursion

Our Level 5 and 6 students recently enjoyed an inspiring incursion with Belinda Paul, founder of RCYCL, who shared her journey of starting and growing a successful business. Students gained valuable insights into what it takes to turn an idea into a business, from identifying a great concept to understanding customers, marketing and making smart business decisions.

The session was particularly valuable as our students prepare for their upcoming Market Day. Belinda encouraged students to think like young entrepreneurs and consider how they can make their stalls appealing, creative and successful. We can’t wait to see them put these ideas into action on Market Day next term!

Science Week RAAF Incursion - 100th Squadron

As part of our Science Week celebrations, our Level 6 students were fortunate to welcome members of the Air Force Heritage Squadron, No. 100 Squadron, for a fascinating incursion. 

Students had the opportunity to learn about Australia’s aviation history, explore the science and technology behind flight, and hear about the incredible aircraft that have played an important role in the Royal Australian Air Force. 

It was a highly engaging experience that sparked plenty of curiosity, questions and enthusiasm from our students. A huge thank you to Wilko for organising another unique and memorable Science Week experience!

Interrelate - Moving Into Teenage Years 

Our Level 6 students have commenced the Interrelate Moving Into the Teen Years program, which will run across three sessions. Designed specifically for students preparing for the transition to secondary school, the program provides a safe and supportive environment to learn about the physical, emotional and social changes that occur during puberty. 

Across the sessions, students will explore age appropriate topics including puberty, relationships, consent, protective behaviours, decision making and preparing for secondary school. The program also encourages students to ask questions, build confidence and continue important conversations with trusted adults at home.

We look forward to continuing these valuable sessions over the coming weeks. Some activities on this topic have been added to the Homework Grid for this cycle.

Maths

In preparation for our much anticipated Market Day next term, our Level 6 students have been building their understanding of financial mathematics. We are currently front loading the key skills and knowledge students will need before they begin planning their own Market Day businesses.

So far, we have been exploring budgeting, costs, revenue, profit and loss, with students working through a range of real world scenarios to understand how financial decisions are made. We will now be delving into percentages and looking at how they are used in everyday financial situations, including discounts, mark ups and calculating profit.

This learning will provide students with a strong foundation to draw upon when Market Day planning begins. They will eventually be able to apply these skills when making decisions about their products, costs, pricing and potential profits. It is a great opportunity for students to see how the maths they learn in the classroom can be applied in a meaningful and practical way.

Literacy

We have now finished reading How to Bee by Bren MacDibble, and what a journey it has been! Our Level 6 students thoroughly enjoyed the novel and became incredibly invested in Peony, her family and the challenges she faced throughout the story. The ending certainly took us by surprise and sparked plenty of reactions and discussion in the classroom! We encourage families to have a chat at home about the ending and hear what your child thought about how Peony’s story concluded. Work tasks on How to Bee have been added to the Homework cycle for this week.

To wrap up our work on How to Bee, students will now begin a mini novel response project. This will give them the opportunity to showcase their understanding of the novel, including its characters, key events, themes and messages, while reflecting on the story as a whole.

Podcasting

Students have commenced work last week and will use the remainder of the term to put together a podcast using all the micro skills they have been learnong this term. The students have gained valuable skills in the use of Audacity to create these pods and most recently have been exploring Pixabay and Mixkit to obtain royalty free sound grabs and effects to enhance their shows. We will look to publish the finished products online for you all to listen to.
