Curating Culture

Once again, it has been a busy and wonderful term in the Boarding House. With each passing day, our girls become more united, their friendships deepening and the bonds formed through this unique shared experience growing stronger.

We are also very aware that with each term that passes, our Year 12s are one step closer to graduation. We are embracing opportunities to support them as their time becomes increasingly marked by “lasts”, recently their final Performing Arts Festival.

If you are an avid reader of the Boarding section of this newsletter, you will know that our weeks of study, activities, and routines are always punctuated by something a little different on a Wednesday. Whether it is a social activity, an intentional cultural experience, or simply something fun, these moments provide an opportunity to gather as a whole House and celebrate together. They are an important part of how we intentionally cultivate culture within our community.

This week was no different. To mark the end of another positive term, we hired a cinema and enjoyed a screening of Toy Story 5, followed by the obligatory Yochi run! 

It would be easy to use activities such as these as a “carrot” or reward system. However, I am less interested in celebrating compliance for compliance’s sake and more interested in cultivating a positive culture within our House. When culture is strong - and currently it is - our girls choose to do the right thing not because they have to or because someone is watching, but because they understand it is the right thing to do and that their choices contribute to a harmonious House for all.

I believe our girls genuinely see how dedicated their staff team is, how deeply we care about their individual success, and how consistently we support them whilst also holding them accountable to high expectations. As we conclude another term, it is an appropriate opportunity to thank our boarding staff for the genuine care, commitment and encouragement they bring to their roles each day.

And so, we mark the end of another busy term by celebrating Loreto Boarding and the young women who make it such a special place. Go well, girls, as you travel home to families who love and miss you dearly. Believe it or not, those of us left behind will miss you too, and we look forward to your safe return next term, when we get to do it all over again.
