Rising Together: Celebrating TIM TAM Moments from RISE Week
Rising Together: Celebrating TIM TAM Moments from RISE Week
I often find myself in the role of motivator and encourager, fostering positive relationships among our students. This past week, during our Year 8 RISE Week, I experienced this dynamic in full force.
Monday: The Reluctant Start
The week began with a gloomy forecast, leaving some Year 8 girls hesitant about kayaking. “But it’s raining!” one exclaimed. “Do we really have to do this? Can’t we just stay on the bus?” Channelling my inner cheerleader, I rallied the girls to the kayaks and refocused their attention to the dolphins who appeared as if on cue.
As we embraced the challenge, their reluctance transformed into laughter and splashes. I watched girls paddle into and onto mangroves, calling oudirections like, “No, I meant your other left!” One duo almost capsized their teacher, exclaiming they “couldn’t stop in time.” Their focus had shifted from the weather to the experience ending with comments like, “Can we do that again?”
Monday’s experience set the stage for an important growth conversation we aptly named TIM TAM moments, celebrated with chocolate treats for the remainder of the week. TIM TAM stands for Transforming “I Can’t” Moments Through Adaptive Motivation.
Friday: The TIM TAM highlight.
By the end of the week, the girls were excelling in TIM TAM moments, quickly turning apprehension into an opportunity to practise adaptive thinking and compassionate motivation. This is where the tables turned for me. As we started the daunting climb up Mount Lofty, I felt a wave of doubt wash over me. The first steep incline had me seriously considering my life's choices. Then, as if on cue were the voices of Year 8 girls, “You got this, Mrs Crowe.” and “You can do it!” At each rest stop I was met with patience, reassurance, positivity and the affectionate nickname of “Nana Crowe”. It was a beautiful reminder that sometimes, the roles of teacher and student blur, and we all have something to learn from each other.
So, here’s to the Year 8 girls who faced the rain, tackled mountain biking, embraced climbing walls, and helped “Nana Crowe” reach the top of Mount Lofty!
May we all carry the spirit of RISE Week and look for TIM TAM opportunities to support one another.
