Grade 5

Reading

This week students continued reading The Grandest Bookshop in the World, working through Chapters 6 to 9. They focused on responding to what they read by evaluating the ideas and information in the text. Students took part in class discussions and practised asking thoughtful questions about the story. They also began looking at magical realism and historical fiction as genres, learning how these styles blend fact and imagination.

Writing

Students worked on a range of sentence-level skills, including using sensory language and figurative language such as metaphors, similes and personification to make their writing more engaging. They practised varying their sentence openings and using "show, don't tell" techniques to add interest and description. Later in the week, students began planning their own narratives, drawing on the magical realism and historical fiction elements from their class novel. They worked on developing settings, characters and story ideas set in 1800s Australia.

Maths 

Students explored units of measurement for length and mass, learning how to compare and select the most suitable unit for different objects. They practised converting between units such as millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres, as well as grams and kilograms. Students also had hands-on opportunities to estimate and measure real objects, comparing their estimates to actual measurements. Partner activities and fluency games helped reinforce these new skills throughout the week.

Humanities

Students explored the impacts of bushfires on people, communities and the environment. They watched videos to build understanding and completed a hands-on activity sorting fire danger rating by severity.

SEL

Students learned about the importance of asking for help clearly and being a supportive friend to others. They practised recognising when they need help and how to listen and support their peers.
