Grade 5/6

This week our Grade 5/6 class began working with Bron, our Community Health Nurse who is facilitating our P4P (Preparation for Puberty) program.
With the introduction of the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD), sexuality education has been identified as an essential and compulsory curriculum component.
Bron has started each session by going through a set of guidelines to make it a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone - these include:
- Who it is appropriate to share this information with-not children younger than Grade 5 - unless this is OK in your household
- Be inclusive
- Its ok to feel whatever emotions you may feel
- To have fun
- Always show respect
- No question is a silly question
Always have the right to pass
Our class is to be commended on their maturity and openness to learning about how their bodies work and change. Bron has a wonderful ability to make this sometimes awkward subject ‘fun’, honest and age appropriate. We have 3 more sessions with Bron before the end of term.
This term continues to keep us busy. We have commenced assessments, have begun thinking about Reconciliation Week and some students have represented St Mary’s School in a district Cross Country event. We are also preparing for our class assembly next Friday May 29th.
Thank you for your continued support.
