Amazing 5/6

From the Teachers

Wow – we can’t believe it’s already Week 8! Time is flying by in Year 5/6, and our students have been busy with a range of exciting opportunities and events, including interschool sports matches, STEM challenges at Cheltenham Sec, and the Maths Talent Quest.

We recently welcomed back Mr Duckett, who became a father for the second time! Students have also been working hard to prepare for our upcoming Night of the Notables, which will be held on Thursday June 18th from 2:40-4:00pm in the Year 5/6 classrooms. We warmly invite parents and families to visit anytime between 3:20pm and 4:00pm to meet some famous and influential figures from history and enjoy the student presentations.

Learning Focuses

Literacy (by Shayla G.)

In Literacy this term, we have been learning about biographies and writing them about notable people such as Steve Irwin, Jane Goodall, and David Attenborough. Now we are creating biographies about a notable person of our choice for ‘Night of the Notables’. I chose Coco Chanel, a French fashion designer who created the famous perfume Chanel No. 5. As part of this project, we have to dress up as our chosen person and create a biography, a poster, a slideshow, and even props to help tell our chosen notable’s story.

Year 5 Maths (by Bodhi F.)

In Maths this week, we have been learning about decimals, including tenths, hundredths, and thousandths. We worked on solving lots of questions to help us understand these concepts better. We also started learning about chance. There are five levels of chance: impossible, unlikely, even chance, likely, and certain. We used these to describe how likely different events are to happen.

Year 6 Maths (by Altay O.)

In Maths this week, we have been doing a lot of different topics. We have been learning about algebra, different kinds of patterns, and chance (probability). We worked on identifying patterns and also solving problems using algebra. We did some fun probability experiments as well using rubber ducks, counters and dice.

Art and Leader In Me (by Holly F.)

In Art, we have been working on designs for a fundraiser. We were able to create artwork of our choice, and our parents can choose to buy different items with our artwork printed on them. These include notebooks, diaries, calendars, posters, pillowcases, cards, and tote bags. In Leader in Me, we have been focusing on Habit 6: Synergise. During our Leader in Me sessions, we have been working in mixed groups of two or three to create a board game based on things that we all enjoy. This has helped us to practise teamwork and cooperation with peers we might not normally work with.
