State Hockey Final

On the 11th of September, we progressed to the next stage of competition and competed at the State Hockey finals which was held at Footscray Hockey Club.

The journey started when we met at Essex Heights at 7.30 in the morning. The bus ride was one hour since there was a lot of traffic. The bus ride was really fun as we all sat at the back of the bus talking about State Hockey.  When we arrived, we started to warm up and get ready for the tough day ahead.

It was a tough day as the schools that competed in our pool were Longford Primary, Fyans Park and Albert Park Primary.

We started off to a good start beating Longford Primary 3-1 from goals from Josh and myself. We were really happy with the result and kept on going with our positive and humble behaviour. The next match was against Fyans Park where it a really tight match, but we won 2-0 from goals from Josh.

The last match which determined who progressed to the Grand Final was a really tough match as we were playing Albert Park who were an experienced hockey school and had lots of hockey players. We did really well in the first half only going down 1-0. We played exceptional and did our absolute best but unfortunately, we ended up losing 2-0.  Meaning we finished 3rd overall.

Given there wasn’t much previous experience in hockey it was an incredible achievement to finish 3rd at the state finals. We were really proud of ourselves and deep down, we all knew we had played our absolute best.

One key moment was when we were up 2-1 with minutes to go. We were really tense and knew anyone could score. We used a positivity and teamwork to get a short corner and making the final score 3-1.

I would like to thank Ms Cotterell for coming along and supporting us throughout the entire day, Ms Hocking for organising everything and helping us. And finally, my dad for coaching the team.

The players who competed in the Essex Heights hockey team were, Josh, Mason, Divesh, Timo, Nick, Deric, Jeremy, Mavi, Henry and myself.

It was another exciting day at the State Hockey event at the Footscray Hockey Club in Yarraville on Thursday 11 September. The team continued their outstanding team work and sportsmanship, encouraging one another throughout all matches. Opposition teams came from all around Victoria and played at a high level. Our students should be extremely proud of finishing second in their pool and third overall in the State.

These fantastic results were due to Patrick’s coaching and also giving up his time Friday lunchtimes and before school for training sessions. It was fun travelling as a team with some family members as well. We really appreciate your support on the day and cheering loudly in the cold and wet weather.

Congratulations to the boys who proudly represented Essex Heights and it was a magnificent team achievement!!

School Sport Victoria U12 Team Trials

I was lucky enough to be nominated to try out for the SSV State AFL team. The first try out session consisted of four round robin matches, against all of the other kids from the region. It was an amazing experience to play with some really talented footballers. There were 900 kids in the initial session and they selected 160 to advance to the next round and I was lucky enough to be selected. At the next stage, the level of competition was really high. Although I tried my best, I didn’t get selected to go further, however it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.

Thank you to Essex Heights and Ms Hocking for nominating me and my parents for taking me to the try outs.

Division Athletics

The sun came out but unfortunately so did the wind, which made conditions difficult for the competitors at the Monash Waverley Division Athletics on Wednesday 8 October. Forty children competed at the Bill Sewart Track in Burwood East in high jump, long jump, triple jump, hurdles, 100m, 200m, 800m, shot put, discus and relay, representing the Monash Heights District and Essex Heights Primary School.

All students were keen to compete after their training sessions at school and over the holidays. They tried hard to beat their personal best in their events, performing extremely well.

Congratulations to everyone who competed and proudly represented EHPS.

Last Wednesday we both competed in the Division Athletics, representing Essex Heights along with others from our school. We were really nervous but also excited to compete in our events throughout the day. Even though we didn’t make it to Region it was a fun and eventful day for all of us. The competition was very competitive and hard but we all tried our best.

A really big thank you to Ms Hocking, Miss Kemp and the parents who came to support.
