Micro Forest Update

Yesterday, Thursday 16 October, was planting day for the EHPS Habitat Planting Project, also referred to as our Micro Forest!

Over the past two years, children at EHPS and children who attend Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) have been working diligently to create a habitat for indigenous plants (located behind the school oval leading down to Outlook Road). This has included removing grass and weeding an area approximately 30m x 9m. We have then laid cardboard and mulched, watered the area, weeded, mulched some more and finally, planted 150 seedlings this week! The seedlings were generously donated by Monash Council who have been great advocates for this project and supported us greatly along the way. The planting happened over two days, with OSHC planting some seedlings on Wednesday afternoon and volunteers from the Year 5 cohort along with a few more children who attend OSHC also assisting and finishing the planting on Thursday morning. A HUGE THANK YOU to all the children who contributed to this project along the way and over the past couple of days as well as the Sustainability Captains, Asher 6D and Caila 6R, and the EHPS Maintenance Coordinator Pete Manning, Mathew Caruana who led the OSHC children, and Anna Mezzetti from Monash Council who also attended the planting day and worked with the children to get all the seedlings into the ground. Our next challenge is to nurture our 150 seedlings keeping them well watered as they grow to create a beautiful habitat that will help to absorb carbon, attract local fauna and can be used to learn about indigenous plants. We look forward to seeing our Habitat grow into a beautiful space over the next few years for our community to enjoy.

Citizen Science: Aussie Bird Count

Each year the community at EHPS are encouraged to take part in a variety of citizen science opportunities. There are many benefits when we engage in these data collection exercises. Firstly, it's an amazing amount of fun, spending time outdoors, searching for species in your local area. Secondly, the data you collect helps inform planning at State and Federal levels.

Many of the citizen science platforms have excellent apps for your phones, which make the process easy and you can use the ID all year round!!
