Prep / One Guy and Thomas

Over the past two weeks, our grades have been busy completing assessments, ready for the teachers to write their reports. We are so proud of everyone for the growth they have made.

Students have been very resilient learning how to swim also, travelling by bus and learning to be safe around water.

Our Curriculum Day was very worthwhile, with lots of  planning for Term 3.

In Literacy we have revised all of our phonics knowledge and this week have moved on to learning about the digraphs, sh, ch, th and tch words and new heart words. We have been working on our own own narrative stories complete with a front cover and blurb. These should come home soon.

Practising heart words to music! When the music stopped each student had to write one of our heart words on tables using whiteboard markers. We played again, but this time when the music stopped, students needed to find a particular heart word and using wipes, they took that word off. I have never seen the tables look so clean!

In Maths students have been learning about length and the importance of using uniform items to measure. We have also started learning about mass. Students have been busy measuring the mass of different items in the classroom, using language such as heavy, heavier, heaviest, lighter, lightest, light and same mass with scales. We have also learnt how to heft to work out which may be lighter/ heavier and then checked with scales. We moved on to learning about capacity this week.

How to help your child at home with their literacy.

Home readers:

Instead of your child reading their take home reader to you, take it in turns to rtead a page each, complete with expression and fluency, so they hear what good reading sounds like.

Daily events:

Ask your child what they learnt about each day in reading, writing, maths, P.E, Art, drama or Science.

Play with sounds: For younger children, point out rhyming words in nursery rhymes and sing songs. You can also "break down" long words by clapping out syllables.

Build comprehension: Before, during, and after reading a book, ask questions like, "What do you think will happen next?" or "What was your favorite part of the story?"

Encourage writing: Provide crayons, markers, and paper. Encourage them to make up their own stories, write a grocery list, or keep a mini-diary for each day.

Mrs Murphy - Grade 1/2 & Mrs Monson - Grade 1/2

Our students have been busy doing assessments over the last couple of weeks, so we can see the progress they have made during Semester 1. It is pleasing to see how far all our students have come from the start of the year to now. Well Done to all our Super Stars!! 🤩🤩

Swimming is still in full swing 💦💦. Students are quite hungry when they get out of the pool, so please pack an extra snack for them, as they take their lunch boxes to the pool with them.

It is a good idea to put in a Wet Bag, for their wet towel, bathers, and goggles etc

We still have swimming on

Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th of June.

Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd of June.

Students have been learning about morphology, which is learning about the parts of words and how those parts help us understand what words mean.

A prefix goes at the beginning of a word.

🔄 re + play = replay

The prefix re- means again.

So replay means play again.

We have also been looking at un -, re- and pre. This week, we are looking at when the ea sound makes the short vowel e sound. And the ure sound.

Maths ➕➖🟰

We have started our unit on Multiplication and Division. We are learning to share collections into equal groups, halves and make arrays.

Boxes Needed for Grades 1 & 2 classes. We need boxes of all shapes and sizes (not too big, please.) Please also be mindful that we have students with nut allergies. We will be using these  as part of our Design Technology unit.

Can you please give your boxes to Mrs Murphy or Mrs Monson. Thankyou 📦📦
