*** Home Readers come back on a Thursday so they can get changed over***
We have been very busy in the Prep classroom learning our alphabet sounds, and if you have heard random sounds being practised at home, now you know why! Phonics is a big focus for us right now, and it’s helping the students build the knowledge they need to begin reading and writing with confidence.

Every day, we dive into phonics lessons where students learn how sounds (phonemes) match to letters (graphemes). This helps them transfer what they hear into what they see on the page. We practise blending sounds together to read words, segmenting sounds to spell them, reading our focus sounds in decodable texts, and even writing words using what they have learned. Busy, busy brains!

Our decodable texts at school are carefully chosen so students can practise exactly what they have been taught. This means they can successfully decode each word, build fluency, and begin recognising words automatically, a very important step in becoming confident readers.

The students have been doing an amazing job applying their phonics knowledge to both reading and writing.

Please take a moment to watch the short videos of a couple of the Preps being the teacher and asking everyone to ‘Say the sounds and read the word”. While the videos might not fully capture it, the smiles, confidence, and sense of achievement at the end of their reading are huge, and moments like these are exactly why I love teaching.
Thank you for supporting our little readers as they learn to crack the reading code!
