Year 6

Chinese Museum - Meleena & Sanuk 🏮🇨🇳🧧

In Week 9, on Tuesday 8th of September, the Year 6’s travelled by train to the CBD to start our adventure in China Town. We had fun all day from trying not to shake or fall in the train, to learning about Chinese culture and the Chinese miners in the Australian Gold Rushes. During our time at the Chinese Museum, we made Chinese lanterns, went on an educational tour which linked with our Australian History unit in Inquiry and went shopping for some Chinese souvenirs. We ate delicious Chinese cuisine at the Chine On Paramount Chinese Restaurant. Some Year 6’s had a go at embracing Chinese culture by eating their meal with chopsticks. Everyone really enjoyed the delicious meal. This excursion really tied in well with what we have been learning about this in Mandarin and Inquiry and relating to our camp this term. After we ate we were on our way on the train pleased with how our 2026 China Town Museum Adventure went.

Athletics - Gok & Axel 🎽🏆⚾

In Week 9, Thursday the 10th of September, 11 students went on an excursion to Newport Park Athletics Track for Divisional Athletics. They had to come to school early because there was a lot of traffic on the way to Newport. First up for the day, three students had Hurdles, one student ran the 100m while another was doing High Jump. Followed by another student who did Shot Put and got third place! One student had the 200m, while another student completed their Long jump. Lastly, three students had Discus which was conveniently right in front of where we were all sitting. Michelle rewarded us all with Zooper Doopers and sour straps from the canteen. After all the students finished their events they left Newport feeling proud of themselves for making it far.

Hooptime - Axel & Gok 🏀🏅

In Week 9,  Wednesday the 9th of September, students in Year 4, 5 and 6 attended a basketball excursion called Hoop Time. The school had 3 different teams: a girls team, a boys team, and a mixed team with both boys and girls, and they all had a different experience. For the girls. They had 5 games, they went well by winning the first 3 games, moving on to the semi-final, which they also won to advance to the grand final, where they unfortunately lost by 1 point, finishing with a win record of 4-1. For the boys, they also played 5 games but had a different story. They started off well by winning 3 games in a row just like the girls, and reached the semi-final, where they won by 21 points, reached the grand-final, and won to advance to Regional Hoop Time with a win record of 5-0. And as for the mixed team, they only had 3 games in which they won all of them and getting a win record of 3-0, but not advancing due to only playing in the rookie division, where there is no advancement. In the end, although not everyone went home a winner, everyone definitely went home proud and happy because of the memories they made with one another.

Vinnies - Nylah  💙🙏

In Week 7, the Social Justice leaders promoted a Vinnies Food Drive. Students from Prep to Grade 6 donated food to the poor, such as tinned food,  packaged goods and long-lasting assortments. This was a great idea because, as it was winter, we provided help to people who may be financially struggling. The leaders have done a great job helping the poor, and now we have helped many of the poor to stock up for the winter. Thank you to all who have thoughtfully donated. 🙂

Sustainability - Students Champion Local Wildlife at Love Your Locals Day

On Friday, September 4th, 2026, sixteen enthusiastic Grade 5 and 6 students represented our school at the Love Your Locals Day event at Werribee Open Range Zoo. This collaborative initiative, supported by Wyndham and Hobsons Bay City Councils alongside the Werribee River Association and Nature West, focused on protecting Western Region wildlife and their habitats.

Our students proudly presented their research display, featuring seven endangered local species, including the platypus and Striped Legless Lizard. Their presentation showcased practical conservation solutions, including the current Sort’d competition at OLSC, where we are encouraging students and teachers to reduce waste and sort it into the correct bins.

The day included engaging activities like practising public speaking, and presenting their research, grassland walks, native grass planting outside the elephant enclosure, and animal encounters. Students exchanged knowledge with thirteen other regional schools and learned from zoo experts and wildlife specialists.

"I really enjoyed the bird skull identification activity," shared Xavier, who presented on the Striped Legless Lizard. Nessa, who focused on the platypus, added, "I really enjoyed seeing other people's projects and learning from other students about endangered species and their habitats."

The excursion proved both educational and inspiring, reinforcing our students' commitment to environmental stewardship. Special thanks to Jodie, Sarena, Scott and Sam for their invaluable support in preparing materials and assisting throughout the day.
