Year 3/4 News

Year 3

What an eventful few weeks we have had! Congratulations to all of the Year 3 students for another successful term, and we can’t wait to see what you achieve in Term 4!

Religion

In Religion, the students continued their exploration of trusting in God by looking at the life of Saint Patrick. They worked to understand the major events of his life and how these events helped Saint Patrick demonstrate trust in God. In particular, the students created a shield to represent the various values that Saint Patrick demonstrates, including courage, forgiveness and trust in God, as well as how they can show trust in God in their own lives.

Wellbeing

In Wellbeing, the students revisited concepts taught throughout the term, mainly focusing on how we can show resilience and how our learning group can work together as a team.

Literacy

The past two weeks have seen the students conclude their study of the text Off We Go Around Australia by Roland Harvey, which we have been focusing on throughout the term. In particular, we focused on our comprehension of the text by answering literal questions (those where the answers can be found directly in the text) and inferential questions (those where you need to ‘read between the lines’ to be able to answer). Finally, to conclude our study, students completed a detailed book review, sharing their understanding of all chapters of the text.

Mathematics

Over the past fortnight, the students have been learning about addition and subtraction, including various strategies used for both, such as number lines, partitioning, the vertical algorithm etc. Students also applied their knowledge of addition and subtraction to the topic of money, looking specifically at how we can add monetary amounts as well as count on to solve how much change would be received.

Inquiry

Students have concluded their study of Geography by presenting the final section of their Inquiry task. In this task, students were asked to choose a place from around the world, find it on a map and answer geographical questions about it, such as which hemisphere it is in and on what continent. Students did well in presenting their global task to the learning group.

Year 4

It has been a very busy few weeks in Year 4. In that time, the students have been continuing to learn about different landmarks that we visited on our Melbourne Urban Camp. The students have had such a big term and are very much looking forward to holidays and having some downtime.

Literacy

In Literacy, we have been looking at different types of poetry. Some of the different types were Haiku, where we have 3 lines; the first and third lines have 5 syllables, and the second line has 7 syllables. A rhyming sentence where we chose a place and made a made-up word to rhyme with it. Alliteration is when most of the words start with the same letter. Lastly, a limerick; where we had to have 5 lines and the first, second and fifth lines had to rhyme with each other and they had to have the same amount of syllables. Also, the third and fourth lines had the same amount of syllables and had to rhyme - that one was the hardest. We also got to do some extra poems that were called Kennings poems. For these poems, we had to describe an object in 2 or 3 verses. Poetry has been fun for everyone, but there were some hard ones to write. Now there are little poets in Grade 4.

Father's Day

On Wednesday 2nd September, we welcomed dads and other special men into our learning spaces to celebrate them for Father's Day. After a delicious breakfast and prayerful liturgy, our dads joined us for some fun activities. We hope they were all very spoiled on Father's Day, and we are very thankful for all they do for us.

Mathematics

Over the last few weeks in maths, we have been focusing on the place value of numbers and decimals.  The students have deepened their understanding of how to partition numbers in both standard and non-standard form. We have been able to do some hands-on investigations where we have been measuring the length, weight and capacity of different objects, recording the measurements, then partitioning the numbers. The students really enjoyed these more practical activities.

Inquiry

Over this term in Inquiry, we have been focusing on the Geography of Australia. The students after camp needed to choose one of the following landmarks to create their own brochure about, St Patrick's Cathedral, Old Melbourne Goal, the MCG, the Shrine of Remembrance, Flinder’s Street Station or the Royal Botanical Gardens. The students needed to research and find out about its purpose, when it was built, its address and one interesting fact. Also, over the term, students have been exploring Minecraft through their own Mini Melbourne world. Each student needed to create NPC, or non-playing characters, to record information about different landmarks in Melbourne.

We have been going on Minecraft Education and have been putting NPCs around a Minecraft Mini Melbourne world. We had to find some landmarks in Melbourne and put in an NPC

In geography, we are learning about landmarks in Australia and in Minecraft we are using a program. With that program, we are using an NPC to mark the places we will go to when we go to camp.

In geography, we are learning about all the landmarks in Melbourne city - what they mean and the reasons why they are there.
