Where Do My Fees Go?

The College extended an invitation to all current Mazenod Families to a short briefing session titled ‘Where Do My Fees Go?’ The briefing session highlighted how schools are funded and the Mazenod context. The evening briefing session was held earlier this month and while broadly invited was only lightly attended.

The context for the briefing was to provide some informed insight / context given the extensive media coverage over recent months regarding the Victorian Education Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA) negotiations.

Below is a Year 12 2026 Fees & Charges comparison with 19 other Catholic Schools – All Boys / All Girls / Co-Ed. The table assists with understanding the comparison of the Mazenod College position within the broader Catholic School sector.

Mazenod College is fully supportive of the increase in staff salaries through the new EBA. This is still being finalised in the Government School sector ahead of being agreed to by the Catholic sectors in late 2026. 

Mazenod College is blessed with continued strong enrolment demand and recognises our ability to attract and retain outstanding Teaching and Support staff. This goes to the heart of the College delivering the educational programs and opportunities our families aspire to for their sons. This requires significant investment in staff, technology and facilities to deliver on these promises.  

To summarise very briefly, Mazenod College is 60% Government Funded which is made up of two funding streams - Commonwealth (48%) and Victorian State (12%). This reflects a Commonwealth assessment of our enrolled community’s Capacity to Contribute which is an assessment based on the census data. This assessment of students and families enrolled at the College, is cross referenced to the ATO, Services Australia and Centrelink. This process is to underpin the equitable distribution of Government Funds per capita to individual schools. Mazenod gets a little more than some based on need, and significantly less than others reflecting school demographics.

The remaining 40% of College income is via family Fees & Charges.

The importance of this funding mix is that our 60% Government funding escalates at 2-3%pa, where as the cost of running a school generally escalates on average at 5-6% pa. As a result, the escalation of our College Fees & Charges to families has to increase. This is to ensure the College’s financial viability for the long term and to support and maintain the breadth of educational offerings.

Like the broader community, particularly with the emerging new EBA, the College is dealing with significant cost pressures. We are working through income and cost management plans to maintain our current educational offerings, meet our family expectations and underpin our long-term financial viability.

Mazenod College is finalising our Fees & Charges for 2027 with the College Advisory Council and MACS ahead of release to families early in Term 4.

Smart Glasses

To protect the privacy and wellbeing of students, staff, and visitors, smart glasses are not permitted at school. Many smart glasses contain cameras, microphones, and connectivity features that can enable images, video, or conversations to be captured without others being aware. As a community, we are committed to ensuring that all individuals can participate in school life with confidence that their privacy will be respected.

Exemptions may be considered where smart glasses are required for medically supported accessibility purposes and have been approved by the school.
