2012 & 2013 Wheelchair Basketball

A highlight of 2012 ACC sport was the introduction of wheelchair basketball, Year 7 Division 2. As student Darcy Tranter writes in his report for the Mazenodian, ‘moving wheelchairs up and down the court was a new experience for most players, resulting in a lot of wheelchair crashes and rolling into walls in the first game’.

He comments that playing real games of wheelchair basketball ‘felt like the Paralympics’ and remembers the exciting experience of playing in front of all Year 7 students. After the season finished, a Mazenod verses Mazenod game was staged to share the experience with the school community. Coaches for the season were teachers David May and David Regan. Wheelchair basketball continued into 2013 with ACC competition.

This significant initiative in College sporting history, was driven by a commitment for the inclusion of Mazenod students who could not otherwise participate alongside their peers even though they had significant sporting talent. Whilst it was an inclusive opportunity for students such as Ethan Devine, it was a learning experience in overcoming disadvantage for all students regardless of their participation.
