FENCING

Congratulations to Alexander B of year 9 who placed 3rd in the 2026 Australian Intermediate Schools Championship competing in the men’s sabre event. A remarkable effort. Well done!

CROSS COUNTRY

On the 22nd of August Riyon, Thomas and Jared competed at the Australian All Schools Cross Country Championships in Ballarat. The conditions were Ballarat’s best and featured plenty of mud!

U14B 3km Riyon placed 4th with a time of 10:59 (Team Vic placed 1st overall)

U15B 4km Jared placed 42nd with a time of 15:55 (Team Vic placed 2nd overall)

U16B 4km Thomas placed 17th with a time of 14:56 (Team Vic placed 1st overall)

An incredible effort by all of the boys. Jared also had competed in a full program at division athletics the day before – great job backing it up!

STATE FINALS

Intermediate Boys Netball

Well done to our Intermediate Boys Netball team on their tremendous efforts at state. Our first game against Catholic College Wodonga was a tough game against a very strong side, but we remained competitive-unfortunately not walking away with the win. Next up, we played Western Heights and won convincingly in the end. Coming runners up in our pool, the boys played the winners of Pool A- St Joseph’s College Echuca which was an extremely close game only losing by two points. 

A big shout out to David C for joining the team and being such as asset on the day. Jake H dominated in the goal circle all day long. Whilst the boys didn’t come home with the win- it was so impressive to have gotten to the State Finals, they put in a lot of effort and continued to work well as a team not only on game days but at all the training sessions throughout the term. 

Also, a big thank you to all the parents who came down to support the team on the day! 

EMR FINALS

Year 8 Boys/Mixed Badminton

On Friday the 21st of August, the year 8 badminton team went to Kilsyth Stadium and played in the regionals. We arrived there at around 9:30 and got briefed about how the day was going to go. Afterwards, the five of us got straight into warming up, ready for the day ahead of us.

Our first opponent was Lilydale Heights who we beat 5 to 1 (3 singles, 2 doubles). Then we went against Ringwood in the second round who we beat 6 to 0 (4 singles, 2 doubles). In the third round we went against Brentwood who posed as a bit of a challenge. However, with a bit of encouragement from our student coaches and teachers, we secured our way into the semi-finals (3 singles, 2 doubles).

The semi-finals were rough. We faced Balwyn who we had lost to last year by a scramble of points (when two schools tie at 3 games each, whoever got the most points altogether wins). This year, Balwyn had recruited some new players who were very skilled. We tried our best, but in the end, we lost, 1 to 5 (1 singles, 0 doubles). We did put up a good battle in the upper doubles (A1 and A2), scoring a nail-biting 17 points due to having great doubles cohesion, practiced in training sessions. Unfortunately, we lost to Balwyn in the semi-finals again. We'll get them next year!

However, the day wasn’t just about winning. While we may have lost, I think I had more fun playing than I ever have. Every school we played showed great sportsmanship. I met so many new people and it was honestly surprising. People are normally sour when they lose but, on this occasion, it was the complete opposite. Everyone was just happy to be there, and it was such a positive environment.

A shout-out to Brentwood, after we beat them, during the 30 or so minutes leading up to the semi-finals, they actually let my teammates and I, play with their team, playing a kind of king-of-the-court. Even our teachers were roped in to play! To top it all off, Brentwood even cheered us on in the semi-finals.

All in all, the day was spectacular. Thank you so much to our teachers (Sara Schluz, Joshua Chia) for organising the day and our student coaches for cheering us on the entire time.

WAVERLEY DIVISION YEAR 8 ROUND ROBIN

Hockey

Girls

Monday was a big day for the Year 8 Girls hockey team as they headed off to District and came away with wins in every game.

In what became a boiling hot day, the girls didn’t let the heat stop them from giving it their all. Their teamwork was seriously impressive, with everyone working together, listening to feedback and adapting to different positions as they progressed. Avin and Lily deserve a huge shout out for shared the goal-keeping duties for the day.

It was also awesome to see so many of last year’s State qualifying girls back together. They’ve clearly still got the same energy (and competitive spirit), and it was great seeing them continue to build on that while welcoming some new members to the team. They should all be super proud of the effort they put in and the way they worked together throughout the day.

Basketball

Girls

Incredibly successful day at the Waverly Division for Year 8 Girls basketball. We managed to snag victories in every single game across both our A and B teams, coming out in 1st place undefeated. 

Despite all the running and a decent challenge from Glen Wavery in game 2, the girls kept their energy and demonstrated fantastic teamwork and school pride. We even got a few three-pointers in a few of the games from both teams. 

Congratulations to all the players, you should be immensely proud of your efforts. 

Table Tennis

On Tuesday 1st September Vermont achieved considerable success in the Division Table Tennis round robin. Students are ably coached by Mr Josh Chia

Girls

Both Girls Teams won their competitions!

The A Team Defeated Glen Waverley 6-0. Then repeated the perfect score against Highvale. They entered the final undefeated by beating Mount Waverley 4-2.

The girls then won the final against Mount Waverley by the same margin 4-2. They will progress to the regional finals!

The B Team defeated Mount Waverley in their sole extended match 6-0.

Boys/Mixed

The boys A Team performed to a high level in the pool matches, defeating Glen Waverley 6-0, before a closer contest against Highvale resulted in a 4-2 win. The boys then made quick work against Mount Waverley winning 6-0.

Unfortunately, Highvale learnt from their earlier defeat and won a few very close contests to win the final against our team 1-5. 2nd place to Vermont.

The Boys B team were undefeated all day, winning 4-2 (including a forfeit) against Glen Waverley, and 6-0 against both Highvale and Mount Waverley. 1st place to Vermont!
