The past couple of weeks has seen an increase in Year 12 students and their parents reaching out for support to the Wellbeing office. These queries have been around study concerns, worries about leaving school, exams and an increase in concern for the mental health and well being for students. There is no doubt that the impending exams and transition out of high school is a time of immense pressure and worry. There are many expectations that all come together at this one point in the school year – classes are busy finishing off content so that students can begin moving into preparing for exams, there is an increase in administrative tasks required such as deciding on preferred courses if students are moving onto study, students are often thinking also about part time work when they finish studying, to name a few of the extra things that VCE students need to think aout around this time.
What can parents/caregivers do?
· Encourage and support your young person to have a break. Resting the brain is extremely important to retain the information needed, and for the young persons wellbeing.
· Understand that there may be less communication or an increase in moodiness when attempting to communicate. It is important to listen to the young person and what they say they need. Try to find the balance around creating conversations when you notice doesn’t seem right and giving space when their words or body language is indicating they are overwhelmed
· Provide a flexible home environment (eg. Allow folio books to be left on the kitchen table or a quiet space)
· Help keep things in perspective. Although it does not feel like it for some young people, these series of exams are a small part of the many achievements the young person will have in their life.
· Seek help either through the House team or the Wellbeing team or via external support services if there are signs that are significantly worrying you for your young person
· Reassurance, love, warmth and patience. Let them feel and know that you are proud of them.
Some helpful questions…
· I know I felt nervous before my year 12 exams, how are you feeling?
· What would be most helpful for me know?
· How can I help right now….would you like me to listen, help you problem-solve, or just give you some space?
· What do you think you need to remind yourself when things feel difficult?
