Performing Arts

Congratulations to the Symphonic Band on the first performance for the year at a whole school assembly. We have welcomed many new students moving up from Year 9 and the band is now settling and building a fabulous sound. They performed Drums A - plenty which is a lively piece with lots of interesting sound from the percussion section.
Southern Area Concert Invitational
The Symphonic Band also performed on Monday 23 March at an invitation concert with Southern Area Concert Band and Bentleigh Secondary College. Each band performed their own programs and then all three bands performed together with 110 musicians on stage (of which 53, were from MGSC). It was a fabulous evening and a great chance for students to play alongside more experienced players in the Southern Area Concert Band and also to see that playing music can easily continue beyond school in community bands.
Farewell and Thank you to Mr Peter Blick
Our wonderful percussion teacher of many years, Peter Blick has made the decision to retire from teaching. Mr Blick came in to see his students this week and shared with us all some of the many stories he had from being here for such a long time and teaching a countless number of students in that time. Many of his students have gone onto careers in music and all have learned a great deal and benefited from learning. We thank him most sincerely for years of service and his contribution to the music program and wish him the very best in retirement.
Autumn Twilight Concert
Tuesday March 31 - 5:30-6:30pm
This event is the first major performance for many of our younger ensembles and includes the world premiere performance by the Year 7 Concert Band and the Year 7 String Orchestra. They will be joined by the Year 8 Strings Orchestra and Year 8 Band, The All Stars Choir, Funk Band, The Saxophone Ensemble and introducing a new student- led jazz group.
Weather permitting, this is an outdoor event held under the Blue Sail near the JLC. Families are encouraged to bring a folding chair and arrive early for the best views. It is a fun performance and intended to introduce our young musicians to playing together in larger groups where they are supported by the many students around them, all at a similar point in their learning. Please check Compass details for performers.
HOUSE Performing Arts Event
Friday 29 May
This is a whole school event run by the students, and led by the HOUSE Captains. There has been a slight change to the Drama section which will directly lead into the massed song. HOUSE Captains are sending out information about registering for auditions for the music and dance sections. Auditions will take place in the first week back next term.
Students interested in being involved in the Drama section, need to register interest and will meet with Captains to read through the scripts and make interpretive decisions.

Library Legato at Lunchtime
Lunchtime library users were treating to performances by the Clarinet Ensemble (led by Eric Ho) and Flute Ensemble (led by Cristy Savage). A great way to spend the final Friday of term. Look out for more mini flash concerts.
Instrumental Music Students
Please check Compass in advance for your lessons times. It is very difficult to move music lessons. Reminder: All instrumental students - please take instruments home. You will progress faster and be able to play more interesting music if you regularly play at home. Families make great audiences for small performances. Show them what you are learning. No instruments are to be left at school more than overnight where it might be needed on both days.
