SSV Greater Western Region Year 7 & 8 Boys Soccer

On Wednesday 7th August, BHS took our Year 7 Boys & Year 8 Boys team to the SSV Greater Western Region Year 7 & 8 Boys Soccer competition at the Wendouree West Soccer Reserve, Ballarat.

The Year 8 team had 4 matches against Colac Secondary College (0 goals to 1 goal), Baimbridge College (5 goals to 0 goals), Mercy Regional College (2 goals to 1 goal) & Holy Trinity Lutheran College (7 goals to 2 goals). An unfortunate slip up in the first game against Colac Secondary College meant the Year 8 team had finished in second place and missed out on a spot in the State Final.

The Year 7 Boys had a far easier assignment with one match against Colac Secondary College after Baimbridge College pulled out on the day. The team got the job done winning the match 4 goals to 1 goal and the team was declared the Greater Western Region Champions.

The Year 7 Boys team will now qualify for the SSV State Year 7 Boys Soccer Championships Centre on Friday 6th September at the Darebin International Sports.

SSV State Intermediate Girls Football Quarter-Finals/Semi-Finals

On Monday 12th August, the BHS Intermediate Girls Football team headed to the SSV State Intermediate Girls Football Quarter-Final & Semi-Finals at the Alfredton Oval. With the home ground advantage the expectations were high for a positive result.

In the Quarter-Final the team played Catherine McAuley College from the Bendigo Region, the winner would progress to the Semi-Final against the other quarter-final winner (Western Heights College & Greensborough College) .

The match started with a flurry of goals from Catherine McAuley which put BHS on the back foot. From here the team was playing catch up and couldn’t bridge the gap. Catherine McAuley was declared the winner 7-4-46 to BHS 2-1-13.

The team has finished in the top 8 teams in the state!

SSV State Senior Girls Football Quarter-Finals/Semi-Finals

On Wednesday 14th August, the BHS Senior Girls Football team headed to the SSV State Senior Girls Football Quarter-Final & Semi-Finals at the Western Oval.

With a scheduled student free day all the students attending sacrificed a day at home to compete for the school, with some even coming in at 7:30am to sit a Further Maths Sac before the event.

In the Quarter-Final the team played St Joseph's College Echuca, the home school of 2024 number 1 draft pick Harley Reid with the winner progressing to the Semi-Final against the other quarter final teams (Strathmore Secondary College & Melbourne Girls College).

The team was certainly undermanned from the get go with a number of students unavailable on the day leaving the team short on the field. The girls still stood up to the challenge but it just wasn't enough against the fresh legs of St Joseph's College. St Josephs College was declared the winner 9-10-64 to BHS 4-3-27.

The team has finished in the top 8 teams in the state!

Senior Coach Robert Simmonds indicated that if the team had a few more players the match result might have looked a lot different. He commended all students attending on a very gutsy performance in the face of all the adversity throughout the day.

Students involved: Georgia Bodey, Claudia Ellis, Matilda Ferguson, Alina Filkova, Sabrina Goodie, Madeline Harrison, Emity Howlett, Masyn Hucker, Mia Larkins, Brooklyn Metcalfe, Imogen O’Brien, Alex Oldaker, Ryley Pidgeon, Stella Roberts, Crystal Thomas, Lily Tumohe

SSV Greater Western Region Senior & Intermediate Basketball

On Thursday 15th August, BHS sent 3 teams (Senior Boys, Senior Girls & Intermediate Boys) to the SSV Greater Western Region Senior & Intermediate Basketball competition at the Selkirk Stadium Ballarat.

The Senior Boys competition had 6 teams broken up into two pools. BHS drew Mercy Regional College (41pts to 37pts) and Emmanuel College (70pts to 50pts). Marian College, Trinity College and Bayview College made up the other pool. 1 win, 1 loss wasn’t enough to secure a place in the Grand Final, instead the team played Marian College to determine the 3rd placed side. It was a close game for the entirety of match but a late spurt from Marian College saw them win the match (44pts to 3pts). BHS finished in 4th place for the competition.

The Senior Girls competition had 6 teams broken up into two pools. BHS drew Trinity College (43pts to 26pts) and Timboon P-12 Community College (72pts to 16pts). The team had the game in cruise control making the most of the opportunities to score when they presented. BHS went on to win the match 49pts to 22pts and declared the Greater Western Region Champions. The team will now progress to the State Championships later in the term.

The Intermediate Boys competition had 6 teams broken up into two pools. BHS drew Horsham College (43pts to 71pts) and Emmanuel College (80pts to 47pts). Trinity College, Monivae College and Mercy Regional College made up the other pool.  2 wins secured the team a position in the Grand Final against Monivae College. Similar to the Senior Girls the Intermediate Boys looked like the best team in the competition and went on to win the match (68pts to 44pts). The team was declared the Greater Western Region Champions and will now progress to the State Championships in Term 4.

The weather was absolutely perfect for cross county running but certain sections of the course provided very difficult conditions under foot.

Unfortunately, the Victorian team didn’t have a great competition finishing on the bottom of the ladder in 6th place, but word out of the Victorian team was that Felix was amongst the best players for the tournament.

Well done on this amazing achievement Felix!
