Video Calls from Japan
On Thursday 14th and Friday 15th of August, Mr Coles, currently on long service leave in Japan and Kana, last year’s Japanese assistant, dialled in from Hiroshima via Google Meet to talk to some of our current Year 7 and 8 students.
On Thursday, students were treated to a tour of Shukkeien – a beautiful garden located in the centre of Hiroshima city. The students got to see a traditional Japanese-style bridge and some of the native koi fish and turtles. They also got to see some traditional Japanese summer sweets when Mr. Coles and Kana ordered some kakigori – Japanese shaved ice.
On Friday, the students were shown around Miyajima Island, just off the coast of Hiroshima. They were able to see Itsukushima shrine – a Japanese Shinto shrine located on the island, and they were also able to see the native deer population, as well as some more delightful traditional Japanese cuisine.
We would like to thank Mr. Coles and Kana for allowing the students to experience a little of what Japan has to offer – especially because both days were in excess of 36!
