Newsletter Week 7

Year 5 and 6 Literacy

Over Weeks 5 and 6, students in Grades 5 and 6 have been immersed in an exciting Author Study of Australian author Andrea Rowe. Students have explored Rowe’s writing style, characters, themes and use of language while developing their understanding of how authors engage and connect with their readers. Students have particularly enjoyed exploring Castle Crashing and Audrey Skips, making connections between the characters, events and themes within the texts.

As part of our Book Week celebrations, students have also been exploring a selection of Book Week shortlisted books. Through shared reading, discussion and creative activities, students have been developing their ability to identify themes, analyse characters, make predictions and express their personal responses to literature.

These experiences have encouraged students to develop a deeper appreciation for Australian authors and illustrators while celebrating the joy, imagination and creativity that books bring to our classrooms. We look forward to continuing our Book Week celebrations and sharing our love of reading with the wider school community!

Year 5

Numeracy:

In numeracy we have been learning about angles and tessellations. My favourite part was creating tessellations to make real-life objects and living things. We see tessellations in honeycombs, the shops and wooden floorboards. - Ethan

In numeracy we are learning about the different types of angles, including obtuse, right, acute, reflex and straight angles. I’ve enjoyed using the protractor to figure out all of the different angles. We can see real-life angles on TVs, desks, doors and paper. - Cameron

Inquiry:

In inquiry we are building bridges as a group project. My favourite part has been learning about the different designs that the engineers use! - Hector

We have been learning about all different types of bridges and structures. Some of the bridges we have learned about include truss, beam and cantilever bridges. I love how we got to work together to build, test and design our bridges. - Tomas

Religion:

In religion we are learning about dignity and global issues. I enjoyed learning about Ronita’s story. She is a woman from the Philippines who lived in poverty and, with the help of Caritas Australia, was able to finish her education to secure a job for her family. - Princess

We learned about a girl called Memory. Memory’s story is inspiring because she never gave up and continued her education to become a carpenter. She never gave up and encouraged others to do the same. God teaches us to do our best to reach our full potential! - Kupa

Year 6

Numeracy: In Mathematics, Grade 6 students have been learning about angles and parallel lines and how to use angles to solve problems. In Week 6, we moved into location and transformation, where students explored positive and negative numbers, plotted points on the four quadrants of a grid, and learnt how shapes can be moved, flipped and turned to create patterns and tessellations.

Inquiry: In Inquiry, Grade 6 students have been investigating why people came to Australia and exploring different historical perspectives. Students have examined the significance of individuals, groups and events in shaping Australia’s history and considered how different experiences can influence the way history is understood.

Religion: In Religious Education, Grade 6 students have been exploring how Confirmation strengthens us to continue Jesus’ mission. Students have learnt about the Great Commission and reflected on how they can live as disciples by sharing the Good News, serving others and being witnesses to Christ through their words and actions. Students have been exploring how their faith calls them to respond to the needs of others through service, justice and putting their faith into action.

Wellbeing: In Wellbeing this term, Grade 6 students have been exploring cyberbullying through the Inform & Empower program. Students have discussed what cyberbullying can look like, how it can affect others and the importance of making safe, respectful and responsible choices when communicating online. They have also explored strategies for responding to cyberbullying and supporting others in creating a positive and inclusive digital community.

Sustainability

Students have been working hard on their Love Your Locals project for their excursion to Werribee Zoo. They have also been working hard to calculate waste usage for each Learning Centre for the Sort'd Competition.

Special Events

Athletics

On Thursday, August 18th, a group of students went to the Werribee Athletics Track to participate in running, jumping, and throwing events. We were waiting for our events to begin when we got there, and when our event was coming up, we had to go to the starting area. All students tried their best competing in their events and some were even successful in getting through to Divisional Athletics. Everyone did great participating in their event, even if they didn't get in. When it wasn't our turn, we watched and cheered on other OLSC students. Everyone had a fantastic day at the track!

Book Week

This week was Book Week, and today everyone came dressed as different characters from books. We saw the costumes of every learning group as they walked around in the hall, and everyone gave each other high fives. It was so much fun seeing everyone's costumes and their imagination. So much effort was put into creating costumes.
