Sustainability and Gardening Club 

Did you know that Werribee river is home to Platypuses, which are only found in the Eastern side of Australia? Did you know that Australia has lizards that don’t technically have legs? Did you know a baby Platypus is called a puggle? Did you know that a Striped Legless Lizard grows to about 30 centimetres long, making it easily confused with a juvenile snake? Did you know that both of these animals are at risk and we are aiming to raise awareness of their importance in Australia’s ecosystem?

One of the biggest causes of Australian animals becoming endangered is habitat loss and destruction.

Urbanisation is contributing to habitat loss, but so is habitat pollution. We can help this by reducing the amount of single use plastic we buy and ensuring rubbish is sorted and disposed of correctly.  How does this help? The more rubbish we produce the more likely it is to end up in the environment, either from littering or blowing out of rubbish bins/ landfill. 

Our Sort’d competition aims to help this growing problem with in our school by educating students on how to correctly sort their rubbish into the right bins and encouraging them to make responsible environmental choices in disposing of their waste.

We hope students keep on supporting the competition and keep up their good work, not just for us, but also our Platypuses and our Striped Legless Lizards.

We've been putting our empty tissue boxes to good use!

Our school's Sustainability Leaders are participating in Love Your Locals again, where this year our school is raising awareness of Platypuses and Striped Legless Lizards.  We have begun creating information bookmarks using our recycled boxes, and these are looking great.
