Prep News

With only three weeks left of school, it has been a busy and exciting term! The students have been working hard, learning lots and enjoying a wonderful range of activities and experiences. We are looking forward to making the most of the final few weeks together which includes an excursion to Scienceworks!
The students have been busy celebrating Book Week and enjoying lots of exciting experiences! They have been exploring a range of Book Week books, using their imagination and creativity to respond to the stories. Students also enjoyed an exciting Reptile Inquiry incursion, where they had the opportunity to learn more about reptiles and living things. To finish off our celebrations, the students had lots of fun dressing up in their favourite costumes for book week and sharing their love of books with their peers!
🦎 Reptile Incursion
On Monday, we had a very exciting visit from Reptile Encounters as part of our learning about life cycles. The students had the opportunity to meet some incredible Australian animals, including a black cockatoo, sugar glider, stick insect, crocodile, python, shingleback lizard and green tree frog! We loved getting up close with the animals and learning more about how they grow, change and survive throughout their life cycles. It was a fantastic hands-on experience that brought our learning to life!
📖 Book Week Parade
What a wonderful celebration of books and reading we had at our Book Week Parade! It was fantastic to see so many students dressed as their favourite book characters and proudly sharing their costumes with their friends. The parade was filled with colour, creativity and excitement, and was a wonderful way to celebrate the joy of stories and the magic of reading. Thank you to our families for helping to make the day so special!
📚 Literacy
During Book Week, the students have been enjoying a range of wonderful stories and getting creative with their learning! We have been reading The Emperor’s Egg, Derek, and Bob and Dob.
The students have been inspired by these stories to create their own artwork and imaginative designs. They made hatching eggs featuring their own creatures, designed colourful fish using pastels, and created their own crocodile mouths and a speech bubble of what Bob could say when he was in the crocodile’s mouth.
It has been wonderful to see their creativity and imagination shine throughout our Book Week activities!
🔤 Phonics
In Phonics, we have begun learning our Stage 4+ sounds! This week, students have been learning the sounds ll, ss and ff. We have been practising recognising these sounds, identifying them in words and building our confidence with reading and writing them. We are excited to continue exploring more Stage 4+ sounds in the coming weeks!
It has been great to see that so much reading has been happening at home. Please continue to read regularly with your child and record this in your child’s take-home journal.
🔢 Mathematics
In Week 6, students have been learning about capacity. They have been developing their understanding by directly comparing the capacity of two containers by pouring from one container into another. Students have also been making predictions about which container they think will hold more and then checking their predictions by pouring and investigating. They have really enjoyed exploring and experimenting with this concept!
In Week 7, we have begun learning about sharing and division. Students are learning that sharing means distributing objects one at a time until there are none left. We have been exploring equal sharing, where objects are shared between groups so that each group receives the same amount. Students have been practising sharing objects equally between two and three groups and developing their understanding of fair and equal sharing.
✝️ Religion
In Religion, students have been learning about how the Church is a community of people who believe in God and why people come together to celebrate Mass. We have also been revisiting the story of the Last Supper, discussing its importance and how it connects to the celebration of Mass. Students enjoyed a special visit from Fr Martin, who spoke to them about the different parts of the Mass and helped them understand what happens during the celebration. Students have been developing their understanding by retelling the story of the Last Supper in their own words, using their knowledge and ideas to share what they have learnt.
🌍 Inquiry
In Inquiry, students have been learning about the life cycles of frogs and butterflies. We have been exploring the different stages of their life cycles and discussing how frogs and butterflies change as they grow. Students have also been learning about what frogs and butterflies need to survive, including food, water, air and a safe habitat. It has been wonderful to see the students developing their understanding of how living things grow and change!
👥 Buddies
In Buddies, the students have continued working on a special project to create a storybook in preparation for Book Week. Our Preps have been working collaboratively with their Year 5 buddies to develop their stories and have been drawing pictures to match the sentences in their books. It has been wonderful to see the students sharing ideas, working together and watching their stories come to life! We are excited to continue developing our special storybooks with our Year 5 buddies.
