Student Voice - Springvale Campus

Welcome to the Week 6 student newsletter! It has already been an exciting and busy term, filled with memorable experiences and achievements across our school community. From Interschool Sports to learning about the world of marketing and business, there has been plenty to celebrate. Students also showed incredible spirit and resilience during the House Cross Country event, cheering each other on and giving their best effort. We are also looking forward to SLC Camp next week, where we will be heading to Golden Valleys Adventure Camp.

This week is National Reconciliation Week. National Reconciliation Week is held each year from May 27 to June 3. These dates recognise two significant moments in Australia’s history: the 1967 Referendum, when Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples were officially recognised in the census, and Mabo Day, which honours Eddie Mabo and his fight for Indigenous land rights. May 26 is also recognised as National Sorry Day, which acknowledges the Stolen Generations and the ongoing impacts of past government policies on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and families. As part of our learning, students have been researching and writing biographies about significant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have made important contributions to Australia. Through this learning, we have been developing a deeper understanding and appreciation of Indigenous histories, cultures and achievements.

In Interschool Sports, we are competing in AFL, netball, softcrosse and soccer. We have been doing extremely well in these sports, and we would like to thank all our teachers/coaches for making it possible. Last week, we played against the Heights Campus, and all teams did an excellent job of including others, using effective communication and showing good manners. Across both campuses, students demonstrated great sportsmanship, which made our teachers extremely proud.

Last Thursday, the SLC participated in an incursion called The Launch. We learnt about marketing, business, profit and expenses. The experience was based on Shark Tank, the famous business television show, where participants introduce their products to judges, known as “sharks”, who then decide whether they would like to invest and help support the product.

We started by learning about what is needed to create a successful product. We then explored how long it can take to develop and produce an idea. After that, we designed a prototype, which is a draft version of a product. Once we finished our designs, one of the judges gave us a budget of five dollars, and we entered the marketplace to purchase materials to build our prototypes. After everyone had finished creating their products, we presented them to the judges, who selected a winning design. Overall, the whole experience was super fun, and we learnt a lot while having fun at the same time.

In Week 7, we are heading off on an adventure to Golden Valleys Camp in Flinders! This trip is going to be packed with excitement and high-energy activities from sunrise to sunset. When we are not tackling obstacle courses or the Giant Swing, we will be laughing with friends, enjoying delicious chef-prepared meals, and singing songs by the campfire. It is going to be an unforgettable experience filled with fresh air, incredible challenges and memories that will last a lifetime!
