5/6 CLASSROOM

English
In English, students have continued exploring our class text, Deadly Science – Solar System, while engaging in nonfiction reading and text analysis. Throughout this unit, students are learning how informative texts are structured, how important information is communicated, and how authors use different text features to help the reader understand a topic. It has been great to hear students excitedly sharing facts they have discovered—particularly when discussing different planets and space phenomena—and making connections between what they are reading and what they already know. We will continue working through the remainder of the text and our writing lessons at the end of this term and into Term 2, before students use their knowledge to plan and write their own explanatory text.
In the Grade 5/6 classroom, we have recently begun using SpellEx to support students in developing age-appropriate spelling skills across all learning areas. Through this approach, students are building and consolidating their phonological, orthographic and morphological knowledge, helping them to make more informed choices when spelling words. Strengthening these skills will support students not only in their weekly spelling work, but also in their writing across all areas of the curriculum.
Religious Education
In Religious Education, students have been working on their Lent Assessment Task, showing their understanding that Lent is a season of transformation. Through class discussions and reflection, students explored how Lent can represent a journey from darkness to light, both in the world and within ourselves. It has been pleasing to see this understanding reflected in their work, with students thoughtfully representing transformation through their designs and explanations. The initial images of their assessment pieces show strong examples of this journey, highlighting growth, hope and positive change. Students will then compile a reflection to accompany their symbolic representation, explaining the meaning behind their work and the choices they have made.
Grade 3&6 NAPLAN celebration
Today, we acknowledged the fantastic effort and persistence shown by our Grade 3 and Grade 5 students during the NAPLAN testing period. To celebrate, students enjoyed some hot chips together. They approached each session with a positive attitude, gave things a go, and showed that they are capable learners who are committed to doing their best. We are very proud of the way they applied themselves throughout the testing period.
Buddy Time – Harmony Week
Our F/1/2 and 5/6 buddies came together on Friday in Week 8 for a special buddy session. Together, they read a Harmony Week themed book and discussed how we have celebrated Harmony Week at St Mary’s. Students then created a portrait of themselves to contribute to our St Mary’s Harmony Garden, which will be displayed in the window of the Performing Arts Room. We look forward to sharing the completed garden with you soon!
