Year 4 - Structures

Stage 2 have been investigating built environments in Science this term. As part of the design process, students have been exploring how different shapes can be used in construction to create strong and stable structures. Using straws and masking tape, students put their knowledge to the test by investigating the strength of different shapes and considering which designs are most effective for building.

Stage 1 - Science

In Science, Stage 1 have been investigating how materials can be changed. They compared pasta before and after it was placed in boiling water, observing how its properties changed during the cooking process.

Students then had the opportunity to manipulate the cooked pasta by stretching, bending and pulling it to create their own spaghetti art pieces. It was a fun, hands-on way to explore how materials can be changed and manipulated. 

Stage 3 - Digital Technologies

Stage 3 students have been learning about Digital Technologies, with a focus on how sensors are used to collect and input data. As part of their learning, students have been exploring how drones use different sensors, including cameras, to capture images and gather information.

The students were excited to welcome Mr James Faris, who kindly donated his time to visit our school and give students a hands-on look at drone technology.  Mr Faris flew a drone around the back oval, demonstrating how it can be controlled and used to collect data. Students were also interested in learning about the thermal cameras used on drones to help locate and monitor animals in national parks.
