Reconciliation Round

During Round 5 of sport, students were encouraged to wear red, black and yellow colours, as well as Reconciliation ribbons or socks in support of Reconciliation Round. Our netball teams proudly wore commemorative Reconciliation bibs and acknowledged the Traditional Custodians of the land at Loreto College Marryatville.

The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2026 is All In - a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every day. The theme reminds us that reconciliation is not a spectator sport; it requires each of us to step forward, take action and contribute to meaningful change. It also recognises that advancing the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is a shared responsibility and not one that First Nations people should carry alone.

The Catholic Girls Sports Association recognised National Reconciliation Week across sporting fixtures held between 27–30 May, providing an opportunity for students and communities to reflect on the importance of respect, understanding and unity as we work together towards reconciliation.

Thunderbird Sessions

Our netballers have enjoyed a number of special development opportunities this term, learning from some of the best in the game. We were fortunate to welcome Adelaide Thunderbirds players Lauren Frew and Matilda Garrett, along with Thunderbirds Assistant Coach Cathy Fellows, who generously shared their knowledge and experience with our students.

The sessions focused on developing fundamental netball skills, game awareness, teamwork and decision-making under pressure. Students were highly engaged and benefited greatly from the opportunity to learn from elite athletes and coaches who compete and coach at the highest level.

We thank Lauren, Matilda and Cathy for their time, enthusiasm and willingness to inspire the next generation of netballers. Their visits have been a highlight of the term and have provided valuable learning experiences for all involved.

Student Achievements

Congratulations to talented athlete Grace C on another outstanding achievement!

Not only has Grace been selected in the U14 State Football Team, but she has also recently earned selection in the U15 State Touch Football Team.

This is a fantastic accomplishment and a testament to Grace’s dedication, skill and hard work across multiple sports. We wish her all the best as she proudly represents South Australia interstate in both teams.

Student Achievements

Good luck, Eugenie!

We wish Year 10 student Eugenie all the best as she heads to the United States in the upcoming school holidays to compete in the International Rowing Challenge in Ann Arbor Michigan.

Well done, Lailah!

From 29-31 May 2026 Year 10 student Lailah and her teammates travelled to Sydney to compete in the International Pacific Open for Aerobics. This competition included all of Australia and New Zealand competing against each other for 3 days. There were some amazing results with Lailah's trio winning their section and Tallulah's team coming second. This is an incredible result and puts us in the top athletes from not only all of Australia but also New Zealand.

Junior Co-curricular Sports

Cross Country State Championships

Well done to Tatum Y and Emily D who represented the East Adelaide SAPSASA district at the Cross Country State Championships last week. The event was held at the Oakbank Racecourse over muddy terrain and in rainy conditions. Tatum overcame an injured ankle to finish in 35th place in the 10-year-olds 2km event (out of 159 participants). Emily finished in 21st place in the 11-year-olds 3km event (out of 162 participants). Emily’s East Adelaide SAPSASA team finished in 3rd place overall, winning bronze medals.

Introduction to Hockey

Well done to our Junior School students who have now completed two of our Introduction to Hockey sessions this term. The sessions involve a combination of skills activities and games, with all equipment provided.

Milan has dazzled with her touch, control and passing skills. Alexis and Vera have shown good speed. Elise and Willow have been passing accurately. Eleanor scored a hattrick at our indoor session last week, while Euniece scored a goal on the buzzer. Brooke starred at her first session, displaying very impressive dribbling skills and stick control. I asked her if she’d played before. “No… but I’ve seen Mighty Ducks 1, 2 and 3.” That explains it!

If your daughter would like to try hockey this winter, please contact Ben.Johnswood@loreto.sa.edu.au. Sessions are run on Thursday afternoons, 3:30-4:30pm on the Loreto Patch Courts. All equipment is provided.

Year 6 Soccer

Well done to our Year 6 White soccer team who started their season with a 3-0 win over Westminster. We kept a clean sheet which was great to see. Alexis was impassable in goals, while Tanvi and Yasmin defended brilliantly. Harper was creative in midfield while Lillyarna and Scarlett showed good speed up forward. Year 5 students Summer and Emily added some bite around goals. Ms Powell was delighted with our teamwork, especially given that it was our first game of the term.

Term 3 Sport

Most of Loreto’s winter sport continues across Terms 2 and 3 and students do not need to re-register for their current winter sport(s).

Thanks, Matilda!

Our junior school netball teams have been lucky to have Matilda Garrett from the Adelaide Thunderbirds run some training sessions this winter. The sessions have been a lot of fun and Matilda has been extremely generous with her time afterwards, signing autographs and posing for photos. It’s certainly been a big winter for Matilda! The Adelaide Thunderbirds currently sit atop the Super Netball ladder, while Matilda has also earned selection in the Australian Diamonds squad. She recently took part in the Big Freeze for FightMND (motor neurone disease) awareness campaign, bravely tackling the icy slide at Adelaide Oval to help raise awareness of motor neurone disease.

Coming Soon… Year 2 Netball

Our Year 2 students will soon have the opportunity to register for summer netball!

We play in the Friday evening Eastern Districts Netball Association in the “Netta” competition. The Netta competition starts in Term 4 and is an introduction to playing netball with modified rules, lower ring heights and smaller netballs. Loreto’s Year 2 netballers train on Monday afternoons, 3:30-4:30pm in the Loreto gym. Matches are 5:30pm on Friday evenings at one of the EDNA venues – either Campbelltown, Maylands or Windsor Gardens.

As most (all?) players will be brand new to netball, we will be offering some preseason training sessions in Term 3. These sessions will be held on Monday August 31, Monday September 7 and Monday September 14.

If any parents or family members would be interested in helping with coaching Year 2 netball, please contact Ben.Johnswood@loreto.sa.edu.au.

Registrations for summer sports, including Year 2 netball, will open on Clipboard early in Term 3.
