Year 3/4 Team News

with Grace,Kayleen, Alison, Hayley, Katherine, Dianna & Christine

Hello Year  3/4 families,

As we approach the end of another busy term, the Grade 3/4s are busy preparing for their Student Conferences in Week 10. Reflecting on their achievements to date, they are creating a slide show that captures their learning highlights. They are excited to present this to you on Tuesday 23 June.

The annual WPS Sports Carnival today was a highlight for many students. We were very pleased with how the Grade 3/4s conducted themselves as they moved around the various activities. It was great to see parents there encouraging and supporting their children and friends.

Curriculum Focus: Term 2 - Weeks 9 and 10

Literacy: In Reading, we will finish our class novel ‘Nim’s Island’ and watch the film, comparing similarities and differences between the two. Using ‘Reader’s Theatre’ and ‘fluency paired reading’ students will continue to practice reading out loud with expression, tone and volume. Notetaking and comprehension skills will be practised this fortnight using printed and online texts.

In Writing, we are working on publishing our narratives using Google Slides, Book Creator or Keynote. In addition to practising their editing skills students are learning about these online publishing tools and how to incorporate images, hand illustrations, background colours, heading styles and fonts.

Numeracy:  This fortnight the students are learning about data and will conduct statistical investigations, formulate questions, collect data, organise, display and interpret data and draw conclusions. Students will use efficient ways to collect and record data and represent and report the results of investigations.

InquiryOur inquiry question in Term Two is ‘How can we care for our health and wellbeing?’ To conclude this unit of work students are creating a brochure on a related topic of their choice.  The ‘Ninja Warriors’ incursion on Monday 15 June will provide a fun and challenging way for the Grade 3/4s to examine the benefits of physical activity and fitness as they participate in an obstacle course.

Willy Kids: Term Two’s topic is ‘Willy Kids are Respectful’. Willy Kids are always respectful and think about others. We are exploring how we can show respect in a range of ways.

Respectful RelationshipsIn Term Two, students are looking at personal and cultural strengths. Students will describe personal and cultural strengths and identify some personal and cultural strengths they can use to respond to challenges and opportunities. They will also describe factors that contribute to  positive relationships with people at  school, at home and in the community.

Homework

Homework is a valuable tool in reinforcing what is being learnt at school. We want our students to think of homework as being an important activity that assists in preparation for life-long learning. All students will receive their homework at school on a Monday and it is due back at school on Friday of the same week.

Homework tasks include:

  • Reading – four nights per week for a minimum of 15 minutes. Students are to record the book titles for the week on the homework sheet.
  • Maths – playing the number games learnt in class at home to continue building number sense and revising learnt skills.
  • Spelling – suggested activities to help practise the words that your child has chosen.
  • Writing – a short writing task to be completed in your child’s Homework Book.

All students have a Homework Book in which they are encouraged to complete their tasks. Please contact your child’s teacher if there are any concerns or questions about the homework tasks.

A reminder that Homework Books need to be returned to school each Friday, regardless of whether or not the homework has been completed.

Upcoming dates to note:

  • Monday 15 June - Ninja Warrior incursion
  • Friday 26 June - End of Term 2, 2.30 pm dismissal
