Students have been diving into Hip Hop this term, with a strong focus on how beats, rhythm and musical structure shape the way dancers move. Across the school, classes have been listening closely to Hip Hop tracks, identifying the steady pulse, the layered rhythms, and the grooves that give the genre its unmistakable feel. They’ve been learning how dancers respond to these musical elements by matching movements to the beat, accenting rhythms, and experimenting with timing and flow.

Alongside the musical work, students have explored Hip Hop’s cultural roots, discussing how the genre grew from community expression, storytelling and creativity. They’ve looked at how music, dance and culture connect, and how artists use beat and rhythm to communicate identity and confidence.

In lessons, students have tried out foundational Hip Hop grooves, practised moving in and out of the beat, and experimented with how different rhythms inspire different styles of movement. It has been energetic, expressive and full of discovery as students build both musical understanding and movement skills.

Students were also introduced to early Hip Hop pioneers Run DMC and Kris Kross, exploring how each group helped shape the sound and style of the genre. Run DMC’s strong rhythmic delivery and beat‑driven tracks showed students how Hip Hop moved into mainstream music, while Kris Kross offered a playful, youthful take on Hip Hop culture that connected instantly with young audiences. Learning about these artists helped students see how beat, style and identity have evolved across different eras of Hip Hop.

Families might like to continue the fun at home by sharing favourite tracks or trying a simple beat‑based movement activity together.
