From the Foundation and 1/2 Classrooms
Mad About Science Incursion:
On Tuesday 1st September our Foundation, Year 1 and 2 students had the opportunity to become scientists for the day during their Mad About Science incursion. Students participated and engaged in two exciting and hands-on sessions: Kitchen Chemistry and Earth and the Milky Way.
During Kitchen Chemistry, students became young scientists as they experimented with vinegar, water, bicarb soda and a colour-changing liquid to explore the differences between acids and bases and investigate pH. Students saw their clear liquids change to pink, purple and blue based on its pH and had to match it to the pH chart.
Students also got to see what happened when they mixed bicarb soda and vinegar in a zip lock bag. We had fun watching it puff up with gas and then stomping on it making it go POP!
To finish off our Kitchen Chemistry students then used their new knowledge to make their own delicious sherbet, we mixed citric acid and icing sugar together.
In Earth and the Milky Way, students explored our solar system, learning about the planets and their order from the sun.
Students were given a print out of the planets and their names and had to put them in order on a black piece of material, making out very own solar system.
Students also investigated gases through an exciting chemical reaction, trapping gas inside a test tube and watching as the pressure caused the lid to pop off!
To finish the session, students created galaxy slime, which was a definite highlight of the day. We mixed glue, activator, food dye and glitter to make it look like a starry night.
It was a wonderful day of hands-on learning, exciting experiments and lots of fun, with students enthusiastically engaging in science and discovering how the world around them works.
