HPV VIC Series – 9th August at Sandown

Many rising well before dawn and some staying overnight in southeastern Melbourne, the Senior EB team were keen to participate in this event, the first we have participated in outside the usual annual November Maryborough event. An event that not only involves school age participants – they were competing on this day against community open teams over 18 and Senior Open.

The exciting lead up to this event and on the day was palpable. Even the extremely cold and crisp start to the day did nothing to dampen spirits as the team came together in the professional pit garages of the historic Sandown Racetrack.

After scrutineering of the trike, the bikes were called to be placed in grid position, Ballarat High School being in 27th place to start the race, then all was off at the sound of the horn. The track is a 3.1km length, much bigger than the Maryborough track we are used to. But the boys worked well together, using their strengths as a team to strategise their order, quick changeovers and short pit times. We have two amazing lads who volunteered to come to be pit crew for the riding team and boy they were on the ball, thinking a step ahead of what was needed, pumping up tyres as they saw the trike coming in, ready for wheel changes and so on. A shout out to these young men.

At the end of 7.5 hours of riding, Ballarat High, the Southern Cross team, holding nice consistent times around the track for the whole day, finished in the exact grid placing they had begun with, completed 71 laps, and were 5th in their category. It is worthy to mention that the 3 trikes in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th place were ONLY just ahead of them with 72 laps.

Their fastest lap over 3.1km - 4 min 50 sec. Incredible efforts from all involved!

😊 Well done boys!! Great teamwork!

Haddon After-School Practices

We are continuing with our after-school practices at Haddon with the team, in preparation for the Maryborough Energy Breakthrough event, which is approaching fast in November. If your child is part of the Energy Breakthrough team, these events run on a Tuesday night sporadically throughout the term, details are placed for approval on your Compass for students involved- you need to respond by giving permission and dropping your child out to the Haddon go-kart track at 4pm on the date given, picking them up at 7pm. So look out for these, as the practices allow us to work on and improve their skills.

Honouring Kym Raneberg

This year is especially meaningful as we honour the memory of Kym Raneberg, a much-loved teacher, founder and long-time champion of our Energy Breakthrough program, who passed away recently. Kym’s passion for the event and for vehicles of every kind, has inspired generations of students. We hope to name a new vehicle in his honour.

How can you help the Energy Breakthrough Program?

We’d love our community’s support to continue building opportunities for students through EB:

 1. A new Vehicle in honour of Kym
