House Swimming Sports

The house swimming carnival was a fantastic day. Lots of colour, lots of costumes, lots of competition and of course the usual lots of bombs. The sunny weather made perfect conditions for students competing in swimming events, cheering, participating in the annual bomb contest and relaxing around the pool. It was great to see students giving it a go whether competing competitively or simply for the fun and in the spirit of gaining house points. A highlight for most of the students was the annual bombing contest from the 3m diving board which provided spectators with a wonderful display of different bombing techniques. You could hear the splash and the agony of some of the impact from the other end of the pool and lots of support was provided for students a little nervous jumping from the 3m board. The noodle race was also highly popular with students and earned valuable house points.

In the end Stiggant were awarded Swimming House Champions.

In addition a House Swimming Champion Trophy was awarded to one student from each house. These students were recognized for gaining the most number of points for their house and for their eager participation on the day.

Anderson – Adam Kamphuis (year 8)
Michel – James Litchfield (year 8)
Newman – Iyla Campbell (year 7)

The day is not only about recognising swimming success but also about building house spirit, leadership and cross year level friendships for all students as well as students and teachers building relationship outside the classroom setting. As part of this, students were awarded prizes for best dressed. This year the competition was at its highest with many fantastic costumes being made.

The day finished off with the traditional house versus staff inflatable crocodile relay which was fiercely contested. With the amount of sabotage (and cheating) undertaken by all houses (and the teachers) there was no overall winner however lots of laughs and different strategies attempted. Congratulations to all students and staff who involved themselves in this event. It was fantastic to see the competitiveness between the staff and students.

All students should be congratulated on their efforts and behaviour on the day. A big thank you also goes to all the staff who contributed to making the 2024 House Swimming Carnival a successful and enjoyable day.

Senior Volleyball

It was a a great day out at Senior Volleyball. Our Year 12 Mixed A team made it to the grand final, only to miss out on the win by 1 point! A an absolutely fantastic effort. Our Year 11/12 B team also had a successful day as undefeated stars! We also acknowledge the comradery and sportsmanship displayed by our second Year 12 A team. Well done to all participants. You gave your absolute best and represented Warrandyte High School with pride.

Intermediate Volleyball

It was a busy day at Intermediate Volleyball with 5 boys teams entered and 1 girls team entered. All teams played to their absolute best with some extremely competitive games. Throughout the day it was fantastic to see the teams encouraging each other and providing advice to help improve their game. In the end the Boys A team came runners up in a close final.

Division Swimming

It was a fantastic day for Warrandyte at Division Swimming. Jagger Manders has made a brilliant start to his high school swimming career by placing 2nd in 50m breaststroke. Charlotte Dibb also performed well coming 3rd in 50m backstroke. The girls entered a team in the 17-20yo Medley Relay coming out with 3rd place - a fantastic effort as our team consisted of primarily junior students: Iyla Campbell (Year 7), Sophie Dibb (Year 8), Charlotte Dibb (Year 9) and Coco Whelan (Year 12). Finally, a very special mention to Coco Whelan, who achieved the title of 20yo Champion coming 1st in the 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 50m butterfly, 50m breaststroke and 2nd in the 100m freestyle-what a way to see out her final year of swimming at Warrandyte High. We wish her the best of luck at regional finals.

Year 7 Volleyball and Tennis

For most of the year 7 students this was their first opportunity to represent the school at an interschool sporting event. Multiple teams of Volleyball and Tennis competed throughout the day with many students playing the sport competitively for the first time. All students gave their absolute best, and it was terrific to see the improvement throughout the day. The students worked extremely well as a team and were always encouraging each other. There will be many more sporting opportunities and hopefully lots of success from this group of students. A big thank you also to the year 11 VET Sport and Recreation students who attended with the year 7’s. They were responsible for coaching, umpiring, scoring, and managing multiple teams. They did a fantastic job and really demonstrated progression in their leadership skills.

Year 8 Volleyball and Baseball

Congratulations to all year 8 students who participated in division volleyball and baseball. It was a great day with all students demonstrating excellent teamwork, sportsmanship and willingness to give their absolute best. The girls A Volleyball team came away victorious in a very close final and will now progress to regional finals. A very big thank you to the year unit 1&2 VET Sport and Recreation students who were in charge of coaching, scoring and umpiring the games. They showed excellent leadership qualities. At baseball a special mention to Quinn and Archie. They provided expert advice and encouragement to the Year 8's and were extremely mature and a great help to the teachers. Well done to all those involved. You have done yourselves and the school proud.

A report from Mr Sinn:

Recently I attended the Year 8 boys Baseball Tournament. Despite limited practice time, the boys played really well, winning 3 out of 4 games with some dominant batting from Adam Kamphuis and a gritty team fielding effort where Warrandyte held another school to just one run for the innings, setting up a one run victory. The highlight for me was seeing students being vocal, encouraging on another and showing sportsmanship and humility despite being frustrated by another team’s actions and seeing some of our older students (Archie Wood and Quinn D’Ambrosio) being mentor figures to the Year 8s. Warrandyte Sport is in good hands with all these students participating passionately!

Regional Swimming

Congratulations to Coco Whelan who competed at the Eastern Region Swimming Championships. Coco came 4th in the 18-20 year old breaststroke and butterfly and 3rd in the 18-20 year old freestyle and backstroke. An amazing achievement after many years of hard work and a great way to finish her swimming for Warrandyte High School. We wish her the best of luck in all further pursuits.

VET SPORT, AQUATICS AND RECREATION UNITS 1&2

It has been a great start to the year for the unit 1&2 VET Sport, Aquatics and Recreation students. As a group they have worked extremely hard to complete 4 units including Participate in workplace health and safety, Provide first aid, Provide CPR and Respond to emergency situations. Through all units a combination of practical and theoretical activities have been undertaken to enable students to develop a strong understanding of all aspects of the course. Highlights of the term included a day excursion to UrbnSurf where students participated in a surf lesson, water safety lesson, basic first aid training and conducted surf rescues. They also looked at potential risks and hazards within the surfing workplace. All students had an excellent day learning and improving their surfing skills whilst also applying classroom learning to real life experience. Students also had a great day completing their first aid and respond to emergency situations qualifications. Throughout the course students were provided with hands on experiences to conduct their own emergency evacuation plans and learnt the key elements of providing CPR and first aid. The students were very mature throughout the day and are now able to contribute to the Warrandyte community as first aiders and have developed great skills and knowledge for their own personal growth. Well done on a great start to the course.
