WHS Wellbeing Framework
This year Warrandyte High School has introduced a new Wellbeing Framework that will be used to help guide our practice, curriculum, and culture. With the help of the Student Voice Council, we have established four pillars within this framework:
- Inclusion (e.g., respect and belonging),
- Support (e.g., social and emotional wellbeing),
- Connection (e.g., relationships and student voice),
- and Encouragement (e.g., resilience and growth mindset).
Bigger than This
WHS was fortunate in being accepted as 1 of 10 schools to participate in the “Bigger Than This” Pilot Project. This project looks at racism within schools and supports students to learn more about racism and ways in which they can stand up and be a voice for others. Our Year 9 students had a fun morning working with facilitators from the program.
Peer Support
We welcomed 20 new Year 10 Peer Support Leaders this year. They have started the year supporting our Year 7 students to transition to secondary school. Some of the amazing things they have been involved with during term 1 include:
- Engaging with Year 7 students during WELL classes. (WELL is a weekly one hour wellbeing class) They have focused on activities that develop building relationships and connections at school.
- Hosted a Pancake Day for the whole school.
- Participated in visiting local primary schools to talk about Warrandyte High School.
- Supported Mr Caruana, Assistant Principal, with school tours for prospective students and families.
- Assisted with WHS Discovery Night.
Adolescent Health Nurse
The well-being team welcomed Shelley Beasley, Adolescent Health Nurse to our team. She commenced in term and here is her welcome to the community:
Hi there! My name is Shelley and I’m the new Adolescent Health Nurse here at Warrandyte HS. I have worked as a Nurse in schools now for over 15 years and I have a passion for working with adolescents. My work involves promoting health and wellbeing messages to the school community; running classroom and small group sessions; and providing health counselling and health information to individual students.
I will be working alongside our school’s Wellbeing Coordinator and Mental Health Practitioner!
I look forward to working with the Warrandyte HS community this year!
What’s to Come in Term 2?
Term 2 is going to be packed full of amazing opportunities for students to engage in a range of wellbeing activities. Each have been carefully selected to fit in with our new Wellbeing Framework, looking at Inclusion, Support, Connection, and Encouragement.
From Minus18 LGBTQIA+ workshops for IDAHOBIT Day focussing on diversity education, to REACH programs focussing on building connection between peers. These workshops, and plenty more, are delivered by trained, qualified, and experienced facilitators with the ultimate goal of improving the wellbeing of our students and the connection between them and their peers.
