Connect: Year 2

Dear Grade 2 Families,
As we wrap up Term 2, we'd like to thank all our Grade 2 families for taking the time to meet with us and discuss your child's progress. It was wonderful to celebrate their achievements and share their learning journey with you. Term 3 is set to be a busy and exciting one, with our swimming program and whole-school concert just around the corner. We can't wait for the students to get involved and make some great memories.
We hope everyone has a relaxing and enjoyable holiday break and returns refreshed for another fantastic term of learning!
Thanks for your support,
Hailee, Emma, Dave and Andrew

Upcoming Learning
Literacy
In Stage 7.5 of the Little Learners Love Literacy scope and sequence, students have continued building their understanding of the extended code by exploring more complex spelling patterns, long vowel sounds, alternative graphemes and common word endings. We have been learning the different ways to say and spell words ending in -ure, including 'yoo-uh' as in pure, 'chuh' as in picture, and 'zhuh' as in treasure. Students have also been investigating words ending in -ion, learning that this suffix can be pronounced 'shun' as in action or expression, and 'zhun' as in vision.
We have now completed our persuasive letters based on The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. Students enjoyed stepping into the shoes of Alexander T. Wolf and pleading his case, arguing that he simply wanted to borrow a cup of sugar to make his dear old Granny a cake and that his terrible cold caused him to sneeze. Through their writing, students developed strong arguments and persuasive language to convince their audience that Alexander T. Wolf was not a villain, but the victim of one big misunderstanding.
Maths
In Maths, we have been building our confidence with adding and subtracting two-digit numbers using a range of strategies and tools. Students have practised partitioning numbers into tens and ones, bridging 10, using empty number lines, and applying vertical algorithms with MAB representations to show regrouping.
We have also enjoyed playing a variety of maths games that strengthen number sense, fluency and problem-solving skills. Some favourites have included Nine Piles, where students explored different ways to make 10 using addition and subtraction, Three in a Row, which involved placing numbers on an empty number line, and Mastermind, where students used clues and reasoning to guess their partner's mystery number.
