Dear Skye Families,
What a massive term it has been! As we head into the holidays, we want to wish all of our families a safe and restful break.
Just a reminder that the first day of Term 3, Monday 13th July, is a Pupil Free Day. Our staff will be continuing their professional development across two exciting areas: Maths Fluency, where we will be launching our whole-school structured fluency program across all year levels, and School of Play, a research-backed, play-based approach to student wellbeing. We look forward to sharing more about the impact of both initiatives as Term 3 gets underway!
A huge shout out to our committed and passionate School Council, who have been doing a fantastic job of making noise and driving action on the ongoing safety issues along Ballarto Road. The traffic challenges during school drop-off and pick-up are well documented and the frustrations are shared right across our community. Whilst we acknowledge the congestion within our parent carpark, the issues are exacerbated in the inability of cars to safely make right-hand turns, both exiting and entering the carpark, onto Ballarto Road.
Led by School Council President Chantelle Richards and newly appointed councillor and Foundation parent Gemma Hardie, our School Council formally wrote to The Hon. Sonya Kilkenny MP (Member for Carrum) outlining the dangerous conditions our families face daily. The letter detailed the visibility challenges for drivers exiting the carpark, how a real multi-car collision has already occurred during pick-up, and how numerous near-misses have been documented. It also raised serious concerns around the inequitable treatment of our school community compared to nearby Flinders Christian College, which received significant road investment just 2km away. Critically, the letter flagged that the upcoming Kindergarten on School Site (KOSS) will add further traffic pressure to an already dangerous stretch of road, making action even more urgent.
Following this, The Hon. Sonya Kilkenny MP escalated the matter directly to the Minister for Roads and Road Safety, formally requesting urgent advice on Ballarto Road's safety record, any audits that have been conducted, and what concrete upgrades can be made to protect our families, including dedicated turning lanes, road widening, improved sightlines, and speed enforcement measures.
We will keep our community updated as this progresses. Thank you to Chantelle, Gemma, and the entire School Council for their tireless advocacy. Our children's safety depends on it.
From Week 2 of Term 3, Skye Primary School will become a dog-free zone. Whilst we are big animal lovers here at Skye, we also have a responsibility to ensure our school grounds are as safe as possible for everyone. In recent times we have had some near misses involving dogs on leads, and we are mindful that many of our students are not comfortable around dogs. To keep our mornings and afternoons safe and calm for all, we ask that dogs are left at home when dropping off or picking up on school grounds. Please note this does not apply to service dogs or therapy dogs. A reminder along with our updated policy will be sent to all families via Sentral at the start of Term 3.
We are super proud of our senior students who represented Skye Primary School at the Interschool Winter Lightning Premiership! Coaches reported outstanding levels of effort and determination throughout the day, and our students were singled out by umpires and representatives from network schools for demonstrating exceptional sportsmanship and respect. It was amazing to welcome them back and receive a number of pennants to show for their efforts!
Congratulations to our Netball and Soccer B teams who took home the premiership, and to our Football A and Football B teams who were outstanding runners-up. A wonderful day all round!
We love having our friends from Froffin It every Friday with their amazing coffee van! It gives our parents and staff some much-needed caffeine to get through to the end of the week, and a great chance to hang out and have a chat. One small thing to keep in mind though, in recent weeks we have had a number of students arriving late to class with hot chocolates in hand. The van is there from 8am, so if you and the kids are planning to grab a hot chocolate, please make sure it is early enough for them to finish up before the 8:45am bell.
Thanks for all your support this term. Have a great break.
Warm regards,
Tim
