Student Achievements

Congratulations to the following students:

Amber King (Year 12), Grace Willis (Year 12) and Maddison Fairfield (Year 10), who will be taking their dancing feet to the stage in 42nd Street. Presented by Musical Theatre Crew, 42nd Street is "a dazzling backstage musical where dreams are made, egos collide, boundaries are crossed, tap shoes fly and the show absolutely must go on!" 

This high-energy, toe-tapping production will run at The Playhouse Theatre from 18–26 September, with Amber appearing as 'Gladys', Grace in the role of 'Peggy Sawyer' and Maddison performing as one of 'The Kids'. Tickets are available online via the link here. 

Next stop for these performers – Broadway. Break a leg!

Jessica Edward (Year 7), who competed at the Australian Athletics National Cross Country Championships held recently in Ballarat. 

Braving cold conditions and a muddy, water-logged course, Jessica finished as the second Tasmanian athlete, placing 55th out of 77 runners and recording a strong 14:12 over the three-kilometre distance. 

Showing impressive resilience, she returned to the track the very next day to compete in the Tasmanian relay team, helping her squad secure 25th place. 

A fantastic effort across both events – congratulations, Jessica! 

Madeleine Henwood (Year 7), who is set to perform as part of the Hobart Gang Show in their annual production, Threads of Gold – Five Decades, One Dream. 

The show is described as a fun-filled journey blending skits, songs and choreography, much of which is created by youth members (Scouts and Guides) and dedicated volunteers. 

The College wishes Madeleine all the very best of luck ahead of the production, which will take to the stage at Hobart College's Mt Nelson Theatre across three evenings from 17–19 September.

Suvaani Rajbhandari (Year 6) and Mrs Claire Huxtable (Year 2 Potoroos Class Teacher), who recently competed in the Northern Suburbs Table Tennis Tas Closed at the YMCA Glenorchy. 

Suvaani showed fantastic sportswomanship with a convincing win against her opponent in the Girls Under 13s Singles. Meanwhile, Mrs Huxtable was lucky to achieve runners-up in a tough Women’s Doubles and Over 30s Women’s Singles. 

Congratulations, Suvanni and Mrs Huxtable on your wonderful achievements!

Evelyn Fraser (Year 4), who has been named on the Tasmanian Swimming Team for the Primary (10–12 years) School Sport Australia Swimming Championships, to be held in Melbourne from 29 November–3 December 2026. 

Evelyn will showcase her skills in the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 100m backstroke and 200m individual medley. 

This is such an outstanding achievement and a wonderful reflection of her hard work and dedication in the pool. Well done, Evelyn! 

Staff achievements

Our very own Senior Drama and Dance Teacher, Miss Lisa Thomas is lighting up the Tasmanian stage in Islander, now showing in the Theatre Royal's Studio Theatre until Saturday 5 September. 

Set on a remote Scottish island, the two-person production sees Lisa and her co-actor shift between multiple roles, using live vocal looping and layered recording technology to bring the island's community to life. 

We are extremely fortunate to benefit from Lisa's expertise and creative leadership here at SMC, and we look forward to following her future artistic endeavours – both on the stage and beyond! 

Mr Alexander (Xander) McKillop, a member of our Murphy's Café staff, has been named the Open Para Athlete of the Year Award in recognition of another outstanding year, including representing Australia at the 2025 Para World Championships. 

Xander, who lives with Joubert Syndrome, is making huge strides toward his dream of becoming an Olympian.
