Mr Jon Franzin

Dear Parents, Students and Friends of St Virgil’s College,

As we approach the mid-way point of the term, I take this opportunity to share some important updates and celebrate significant milestones within our College community.

Staff Announcements

I am delighted to announce three key appointments that will strengthen our leadership and support programs.

Director of Student Wellbeing

Mr. Will Geeves has been appointed to the substantive position of Director of Student Wellbeing, commencing in 2026. Will is currently serving in an acting capacity and has previously led Doyle House. His dedication to pastoral care and student wellbeing has been exemplary and we are confident he will continue to enhance the wellbeing initiatives that support our young men.

Marketing Manager

We warmly welcome Mrs. Niamh Cullen to the College as she steps into the 12-month parental leave role of Marketing Manager, commencing next Monday 3 November. Niamh brings a wealth of experience in journalism and media, holding joint Honours Degrees in English and History, and a Master of Journalism from the University of Dublin. Her professional background includes editorial roles at the Mercury, Daily Telegraph, Sunday Telegraph and the Irish Daily Mail. Currently the owner of the Claremont Post Office, Niamh is excited to contribute to the College marketing and communications efforts. Please join us in making her feel welcome.

Music Teacher

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Mr. Martin Smith as Music Teacher (Junior/Senior), commencing in 2026. Mr. Smith brings a strong academic foundation and extensive experience in music education. He holds a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Teaching from the University of Tasmania, along with a postgraduate Diploma in Performance and Teaching from the University of Melbourne. Currently serving as the K-10 Music Teacher and Band Director at Dominic College, Mr. Smith has led the school’s band program since 2017.

Beyond the classroom, Mr. Smith is the Band Director of the Glenorchy City Community Brass and a Trombone Tutor at the Island Brass Academy. Mr. Smith comes highly recommended and is recognised for his passion, leadership and commitment to nurturing musical talent. We warmly congratulate him on this significant appointment and look forward to the energy and expertise he will bring to our College’s music program.

Farewell to Br Peter Flint

On Wednesday 22 October, we bid a heartfelt farewell to Br Peter Flint, who concluded his ministry with the Christian Brothers in Tasmania. Br. Peter’s departure marks the end of a chapter that began in 1909 when the Brothers arrived in Hobart to establish St Virgil’s College. Over 27 years, Br Peter has served our community with quiet strength, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the mission of Blessed Edmund Rice. His roles have included College Counsellor, Parish Councillor, Prison visitor, and Loui’s Van volunteer. Br Peter also played a pivotal role in the College’s sailing program, shaping generations or young men. We thank him deeply for his service and legacy.

Celebrating the Class of 2025

Today we celebrate the final day of school for our Year 12 students – a moment filled with pride, reflection, and anticipation.

As the Class of 2025 concludes their formal lessons, we pause to celebrate and give thanks for their incredible contributions they have made to our College community. Their leadership, resilience, creativity, and spirit will leave a lasting impact and we are proud of the legacy they leave behind.

As they now turn to their attention to exams and the next chapter in their journey, we wish all our Year 12 Graduates every success. Approach this time with confidence, knowing that you are well prepared and supported. Your future is bright, and we look forward to celebrating your success with family and friends at the Year 12 Graduation Mass, Speech Day and Valedictory Dinner. Go forward with courage and kindness. Make your mark and never forget that you will always be a Virgilian.

Congratulations Year 12, we are so proud of you.

Best wishes for the week ahead.

Jon Franzin
