Year 6 Come & Try Rowing Day

Our Year 6 students swapped the classroom for oars recently. The boys were given a tour of our rowing facilities at New Town Bay, before getting an opportunity to hit the water and the gym.

A big thank-you to our rowing coaches and no students helpers for making the day run smoothly.

Soccer

Catholic Regional College - North Keilor

Team sVc faced Catholic Regional College from North Keilor today in two friendly soccer matches last last term.

This was a fantastic opportunity for both of our EREA Football squads to come together once again before the SSATIS Soccer finals.

Our Year 9-11 team displayed an outstanding performance, winning the match 12-0. The momentum was established early with a hat trick from Viktor Gordon within the first eleven minutes, before his teammates joined in on the fun, with some questionable goal celebration routines on display.

The Year 7/8 match was a much closer and more physical contest. The teams were locked at 0-0 at halftime. However, Team sVc gained an advantage at the start of the second half, taking a 2-0 lead with 15 minutes remaining. Despite this, two mistakes by Team sVc allowed the visitors to equalise at 2-2 with just two minutes left. Fortunately, a penalty awarded in the dying seconds secured a victory for St. Virgil's, ending the match 3-2.

Thank you to The Friends School for hosting the matches and Strike  Soccer School for their coordination of the day.  All teams enjoyed a BBQ lunch at Cornelian Bay before returning to Austins Ferry to finish off the school week.

Well done, boys, for representing the College with pride and exhibiting the sportsmanship, fair play, and respect for officials that the game deserves.

SSATIS Finals

Soccer continues to thrive at the College, with seven teams participating in the Southern SATIS rosters. Four of those teams made it to the Southern SATIS Soccer Finals at Warrior Park. Despite extremely blustery conditions, all teams delivered thrilling football.

The Year 7 boys played with great freedom from the start, showcasing outstanding quick movement and passing, along with some fantastic goals.

In the Year 8 final (played in week 1 Term 4), despite trailing 1-0 at halftime against a determined opponent from The Friends School, Team sVc displayed remarkable resilience and tactical acumen in the second half, transforming the match into a fantastic 4-1 victory.

The Year 9 boys dominated much of the match but fell behind early due to a stunning long-range strike into the top corner. While chasing the game, Team sVc was unfortunate not to receive a penalty in the dying seconds that could have led to a victory. Ultimately, the match ended in a draw, and TFS took home the trophy.

In the Year 10 match, Team sVc sought redemption after losing to MCK during the roster matches. In a very physical game, Team sVc maintained control throughout and emerged as deserving winners.

Honouring Brother Peter Flint – A Legacy of Service and Spirit 🌟

Last Wednesday, at a Senior School Assembly before the long weekend break, the College celebrated and gave thanks to Brother Peter Flint, the final Christian Brother to serve in Hobart, marking the end of a chapter that began in 1909 with the arrival of Brother Alphonsus Prunster.

For 27 years, Br Peter has been a quiet force of compassion, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the mission of Blessed Edmund Rice. His roles have been many—school counsellor, parish councillor and Loui’s Van volunteer.

One of his most enduring contributions has been his leadership in the St Virgil’s Sailing Program, where he taught not just skills on the water, but values of teamwork, discipline, and resilience that shaped generations of young men.

Br Peter’s presence has been a blessing to the St Virgil’s College community and beyond. His legacy joins that of the 215 Christian Brothers who served in Hobart and the 400 who shaped education across Tasmania.

As we thanked Br Peter for his years of service, we also honoured the vision set in 1911—that our college would send forth young men of strong moral character and high ideals. Mission achieved. 🙌

Br Peter was visibly touched by the expressions of gratitude, and the outstanding performances of the War Cry will be remembered for a long time.

As Br Peter left the quad for the final time, he was given a guard of honour by our Year 12 cohort, accompanied by an enthusiastic '3 cheers' from everyone in attendance.

Thank you, Brother Peter Flint. You have truly lived the mission.

BMX

A special shout-out to Year 7 student athlete, Max Headlam, for his BMX prowess.

Max has recently shone brightly on the national stage, proudly representing Tasmania with remarkable achievements. He excelled at the NSW State Titles held in the vibrant setting of Castle Hill, demonstrating incredible skill and determination. His journey continued at the prestigious Australian Championships in MacArthur, Sydney, where he faced fierce competition and showcased his talent.

Not only that, but Max also made waves at the exhilarating Pump Track Nationals in Sydney, navigating the twists and turns with finesse.

Currently, Max holds the coveted T2 plate, placing him an impressive 2nd among all riders in Tasmania for his age group. As he gears up for the Tasmanian State Titles this Sunday, the excitement is palpable, and Max is ready to go.

Congratulations to Max on his outstanding performances this year, and best of luck as he continues to chase his dreams!
