SENIOR SCHOOL | Update

Dear Years 11 and 12 Parents/Carers and Students

There is a real sense that we are entering an important stretch of the year on the Senior Campus. For many of our students, particularly our Year 12 students and those Year 11 students completing a Unit 3/4 subject, the next few weeks will be an important opportunity to consolidate learning, identify areas for improvement and build the habits that will support them through the assessment and examination period.

This is particularly relevant as many subjects move towards the completion of Unit 4 and exams begin to come into view. While it can be tempting for students to wait until the examination period before really stepping up their preparation, we know that the greatest gains are often made well before then. Using study periods purposefully, revisiting learning regularly and identifying gaps in knowledge now can make a significant difference.

We are continuing to encourage students to make use of effective study strategies, particularly during their study periods, such as retrieval practice and spaced practice, as well as applying their knowledge through practice SACs and examination questions. Just as importantly, students should be seeking feedback from their teachers and using that feedback to refine how they apply what they know. There is still plenty of time to make significant progress, and building momentum now will put students in a much stronger position later in the year. The September practice exam timetable is now available. These practice exams provide another invaluable opportunity for students to refine their study and revision techniques, get comfortable in exam conditions, and apply their knowledge and skills under timed conditions.

Our Year 12 Parent VTAC Information Evening was a great success and another important milestone for our senior students. It was fantastic to see so many families on site, engaging with our Careers and Year 12 team as students begin the process of considering and entering their preferences for next year. This can be an exciting, but also sometimes overwhelming, time for students and families, and I encourage anyone who needs support to reach out. Our Careers team does an outstanding job supporting students through this process, and the FHS Careers website and regular Careers Newsletter are both excellent sources of information and updates.

We have also had the opportunity to celebrate some of the incredible talent that exists within our Senior School. Congratulations to all of our students involved in the recent production of Mary Poppins. It was an outstanding show and, as always, a real highlight of the school year. Whether they were performing on stage, working behind the scenes, or contributing as part of the ensemble and crew, our senior students demonstrated enormous talent, commitment and professionalism. Just as importantly, they provided fantastic role models for our younger students.

It was a pleasure to attend our Winter Music Concert and see more of this talent on display. These events are such a great representation of what our pillars of Aspiration, Excellence and Community can look like in practice. Students challenging themselves, working together, supporting one another and sharing their talents with our community is something we should all be very proud of.

We are also looking forward to the Year 11 Central Australia Trip. It was fantastic to see so many families attend the recent information evening, and I know there is plenty of excitement building amongst our Year 11 students. This experience is often remembered as one of the highlights of a student’s time at Frankston High School. A huge thank you to Ms Ginger Parker and the team for the considerable work that goes into preparing an experience of this scale.

Our Parent Student Teacher Conferences are also coming up, with bookings opening in next week. These online meetings provide another valuable opportunity for families to connect with teachers, discuss progress and receive feedback about areas of strength and areas for further growth. I encourage all families to make the most of this opportunity. The Senior Team is also currently meeting with students to check in on their progress and current performance, ensuring that we are identifying where additional support or challenge may be required.

As we move through this important part of the year, I want to continue to encourage our students to make the most of the opportunities in front of them. Excellence is not about an outcome. It is about the pride in the choices we make each day, the effort we put into our learning, the way we respond when things are difficult and our willingness to seek help and improve. These are the habits that will support our students not only through their time at Frankston High School, but well beyond it.
