Applied Studies

This term, our Agriculture and Food Technology students are the focus for the TAS newsletter, with a focus on Year 9 and Year 10. Year 9 Agriculture has recently been learning about Poultry production and Sheep production, and Year 10 Agriculture has been focusing on Winter cropping and Cattle production. Year 9 Food Technology has been learning about Food Equity and Food for special occasions, and Year 10 Food Technology has been looking into Food for Special needs and Food trends.

Students were asked about the practical skills that they have learnt since the beginning of their elective course; here's what they had to say:

Agriculture

Some of the skills that I have learnt include how to safely use equipment, avoiding the dangers, and how to take care of animals, which will benefit me in the future as I would like to become a Vet. Lilliarna Power - Year 9

I have learnt how to identify cattle breeds and make estimates based on carcass value and EBV. Xavier Smith - Year 10

I have learnt how to care for a plant and grow it well. I also discovered how the different subsystems of an enterprise interact. Ned Halloway - Year 10

Food Technology

 A real-world skill that I have learnt and would use outside of school is how to cook certain types of foods for others. Aibel Ajin - Year 9 

How to cook for people with certain allergies and needs. Chevy Heffernan - Year 9 

Knife safety and how to properly use a knife in the kitchen. I am now using these skills everyday when I cook. Ellie Maclean - Year 9 

I have learnt recipes to cook nice food and I have learnt about Australian food and food equality across the world. Jazzy Taber - Year 9  

How to safely prepare and cook a variety of foods. We have learnt to cut things properly, hygiene practices, and properly washing and drying equipment.  Myra Meldrum - Year 9 

Students were then asked about what specific activities or lessons they enjoyed the most.

Agriculture

I’ve enjoyed the lessons where we’ve learnt about farm animals and gone into depth of how to safely and responsibly care for them, attend to their needs throughout their lives. Samantha Mooney - Year 9 

I am really enjoying our current topic of Cattle production as it is a topic area that I knew very little about. Drew Burkinshaw -  Year 10 

I really enjoy doing Prac and getting to go to the Ag Plot and complete daily chores. I also enjoy feeding the chickens and hanging out with Gus. Audrey De Jong - Year 10 

Food Technology

I really enjoyed the prac lesson where we were blindfolded and our partner had to guide us to find the ingredients around the school and cook blindfolded. It was fun and challenging. Ben O’Reilly-Brooke - Year 9 

I really enjoyed all of the pracs, I get to cook things that I would not normally cook at home or be exposed to. It is really fun to learn new cooking skills and techniques. Chloe Tsang - Year 9

Agriculture

Owning an animal takes a lot of effort, commitment and responsibility to fulfil their needs and make sure they are healthy and safe. Lilliarna Power - Year 9 

Food Technology

Learning how to safely and correctly prepare meals and handle kitchen equipment.

To appreciate the food that I have because some people drink dirty water and dont have enough food. I am grateful for what I have. Max Jordan - Year 9

Learning how to do all of the different jobs in the kitchen and understand all of the roles and responsibilities of cooking in a group. Piper Brunyee - Year 10 

How to thoroughly wash dishes for food safety. Sean McDermott - Year 10
