Exploring Indigenous Knowledge in Food Studies
Our Indigenous Artist-in-Residence, Sam Richards, worked with the Year 9 Food Studies classes this week, introducing students to the Indigenous concept of the Seven Seasons, drawn from various cultures across Australia. Unlike the European calendar, these seasons are based on natural cycles in the environment, such as changes in weather, animal behaviour and plant life.
Sam explained how the number of seasons differs across regions, with Southern Australia recognising seven seasons and some Northern areas identifying six, reflecting their unique climates.
Students also learned about the many Indigenous uses of local plants and trees, from food and medicine to tools and in some cases, all three. Sam then led an in-depth discussion about the plants in our own area and their specific roles in daily life.
