WEEKS 6&7
What We Have Been Learning
English
This week in English, students have been diving deeply into our Narrative and Novel Study unit. Our learning has focused on:
- Using figurative language (similes, metaphors and personification) to create mood
- Exploring how authors build emotional connections to characters in Blueback
- Identifying foreshadowing and understanding how it builds anticipation
- Strengthening persuasive writing through emotive language and modal verbs (must, should, need to)
- Improving typing accuracy and writing stamina
Students have been thinking carefully about how authors choose language to influence readers and how they can apply these techniques in their own writing.
Mathematics
In Maths, our focus has been Place Value and Rounding. Students have been learning to:
- Rename numbers flexibly using place value
- Round numbers to the nearest ten, hundred and thousand
- Place numbers accurately on number lines
- Explain patterns when adding and subtracting tens, hundreds and thousands
We have been building strong mathematical reasoning skills and encouraging students to explain why their answers make sense.
What’s Coming Up
English
We will continue strengthening our writing skills by focusing on:
- Sentence length and structure to create mood
- Expanded noun groups to build imagery
- Writing complex sentences using subordinating conjunctions
- Planning and drafting persuasive and narrative texts
- Continuing our work with rich mentor texts
Students will also complete a narrative pre-write task to get the students prepared for NAPLAN conditions.
Maths
In the coming weeks, students will begin a new unit on Factors and Divisibility.
We will be learning to:
- Use the “Double One Factor, Halve the Other” multiplication strategy to solve problems more efficiently
- Explain why doubling one factor and halving the other keeps the product the same
- Apply this strategy to larger numbers and identify when it is most useful
- Find and represent all factors of a number using factor rainbows
- Identify and list multiples of a number
- Explain what makes a number divisible by another number
Students will use hands-on materials, arrays, balance scale investigations and collaborative Maths Buddy tasks to deepen their understanding.
Important Reminder – Mobile Phones
If students bring a mobile phone to school, it must be handed to their classroom teacher each morning.
Phones are not to remain in school bags during the day.
Thank you for your support in reinforcing this expectation.
Homework Reminder
Please ensure students are:
- Practising times tables on timetables.com
- Reading for 20 minutes each night
- Practising their weekly spelling words
- Filling in their diaries daily
- Bringing their diaries to school every morning
Consistency with homework supports classroom learning and builds strong study habits.
NAPLAN
Students have been working hard across all curriculum areas, and we are looking forward to seeing them approach NAPLAN with confidence and resilience.
