Our Learning - Weeks 6 & 7

The Outcomes are based on the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework (VEYLDF). The VEYLDF is a curriculum framework designed for early childhood education in Victoria, focusing on children birth to eight years.

Outcome 1: Children have a strong sense of identity

Over the past month, we have seen the children begin to form positive relationships with their educators and peers, developing a sense of security within these that enables them to approach many new experiences and challenges. The children are already beginning to develop a strong sense of independence and sense of autonomy as they carry out a range of self-help tasks, such as carrying their own bags in to kinder, learn to pack their bags at the end of the day and practice the skills to manage their lunch boxes.

Outcome 2: Children are connected with and contribute to their world

Across each of the kindergarten rooms, the children have had the opportunity to learn more about the cultural events of Ramadan and Chinese New Year, listening to stories which explain these and different activities, foods, decorations and attire associated with them. To further embed these experiences within our programs, cultural artefacts have been displayed around the rooms, dishes, cooking implements and foods added to the dramatic play areas, and traditional outfits have been available for the children to try on.

Outcome 3: Children have a strong sense of wellbeing

We are working closely with the children to support their developing understanding of their emotions and those of their peers. With the support of The Zones of Regulation the children are learning to recognise what the different emotions look like, to identify how they themselves are feeling and to explore what has lead them to feel that way. As we continue to explore this we will assist the children in building a range of strategies that they can employ to help them to regulate their emotions.

Through our Inquiry Unit, the children have been exposed to the concept of 'Eating a Rainbow', each day eating foods of a range of different colours, and learning about the benefits of these coloured foods for different parts of our bodies.

Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners

As they are engaged in the different experiences within the kindergarten environment, we are encouraging them to take their thinking to a deeper level by asking them questions and guiding them to find the answers themselves, by having them draw their ideas and theories and by supporting them to engage in a process of trial and error when they encounter a new activity or a challenge, rather than immediately providing them with an answer. In doing so, the children are developing the skills to become independent learners who are willing to take risks and persevere at a task as they seek to make sense of their world.

Outcome 5: Children are effective communicators

Through their engagement in group times, the children have been able to share their ideas of what is required to ensure their health and well being, in terms of diet, rest and exercise. While engaged in these discussions the children are also exposed to new ideas from thier peers, which helps to shape and expand their own understandings.

Inquiry: Healthy choices, Healthy me.

An inquiry into:

  • Daily habits and routines
  • How the choices we make affect our health
  • What it means to have a balanced lifestyle

Over the course of the term, children will:

  • Develop their emerging autonomy, inter-dependence, resilience and sense of agency
  • Develop knowledgeable and confident self-identities
  • Express emotions and views constructively
