Spotlight on Learning

Jerusalem Community

Dear Families,

Welcome back to Term 3! We hope all our Year 1 families enjoyed a restful and enjoyable holiday break. The students have settled into the new term, returning with enthusiasm, positive attitudes, and a readiness to learn. We are proud of the way they have reconnected with their classmates and classroom routines.

Term 3 promises to be an exciting and rewarding term filled with engaging learning opportunities across all curriculum areas.  We look forward to supporting each student as they continue to grow academically, socially, and spiritually.

What we learnt this week and the term ahead !

Religious Education: This week, students explored the meaning of traditions by discussing Catholic, family, and school traditions. They reflected on special practices and celebrations in their own lives, as well as school and Church events that have become meaningful traditions.

Writing:  This week we started to learn about postal letters. Why people might write a letter and what we might put in one. We explored this through the book "The day the crayons quit" by Drew Daywalt. We are beginning to use dotted thirds during handwriting and writing lessons. We are proud of our students starting something new.

Mathematics:  This week students will be learning about sharing and grouping starting with sharing items equally in a group. We will continue this next week. Students show us their work by drawing an image, using mathematical symbols and writing a sentence. This helps them cement the concept of sharing in 3 different ways.

Integrated Curriculum:  This week we are learning about the purpose of Music, Dance and Drama, in the context of Ceremony by Adam Goodes and Ellie Laing. What do each of the arts areas offer differently and how do we see them enacted with the book, our school and our traditions.

Social and Emotional Learning: Next week students will begin learning about gender norms and stereotypes. Through stories and class discussions, they will explore the idea that everyone can enjoy the same toys, games, colours, interests, and careers, regardless of gender.

Auslan:  This week in Auslan we learnt signs to say if we like something or if we do not want to do something.

What you can do at home

• Listen to your child read regularly and encourage them to use their decoding strategies when they come to an unfamiliar word.

Gallery Image

• After reading, ask your child to retell what happened, share their favourite part, or explain how a character was feeling.

• Re-reading familiar texts is a great way to build confidence, fluency and expression.

• Notice numbers in everyday places and ask questions like, “How many altogether?” or “How do you know?”

• A curious question to ask this week could be: What is something you learned that you are proud of?

Important Reminders:

  • Fidget Toys

We kindly ask that students do not bring fidget toys to school unless their use is a planned adjustment in consultation with Allied Health Professionals. Students who bring fidget toys without an approved adjustment will be asked to place them in their school bag for the remainder of the day to take home. We appreciate your support in encouraging your child to leave fidget toys at home.

  • Please ensure that you are labelling your child's belongings.

  • Can we please ask for a pair of socks and underwear to be placed in the front zip pocket of your child's school bag in case of a toileting accident.

  • Wednesday 5th August - Photo Day - please use QR code in the flyer below
