Spotlight on Learning

Bethany Community

Dear Families,

Welcome back to Term 3! We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable holiday break. It has been wonderful to welcome the students back for another exciting term of learning.

To begin the term, students had the wonderful opportunity to attend the performance of Hadestown at St Peter's College. The production provided an engaging introduction to our Integrated Studies unit, allowing students to experience storytelling, history and the arts in a meaningful way. We look forward to building on this experience throughout the term as students deepen their understanding through a range of engaging learning activities.

Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to another successful term together.

Learning in Year 5 for Term 3:

Religious Education:

Next week, students will learn about The Last Supper and the tradition of Holy Communion. They will explore the significance of Jesus' final meal with His disciples and develop an understanding of why Communion remains an important tradition in the Catholic Church today. Through Scripture, class discussions and reflection, students will explain the meaning of Communion and its importance in the life of the Church.

English:

Next week in English, Year 5 students will continue reading Convict Boy while exploring the features and structure of information texts. They will develop their note-taking skills by identifying key facts, organising information from a range of sources, and using their notes to support the planning and writing of an information text.

Mathematics:

Next week in Mathematics, Year 4 students will learn how to find equivalent fractions with related denominators. They will explore how fractions can represent the same value even when the numerator and denominator are different, using visual models and number strategies to build their understanding and confidence with fractions.

Integrated Curriculum:

In Integrated Studies, Year 5 students are learning how dance communicates ideas, emotions and cultural traditions across different cultures. They will explore a variety of dance styles from around the world, participate safely and respectfully in movement activities, and work cooperatively with their peers. Students will also reflect on how movement, rhythm and expression can be used to tell stories and express meaning.

Auslan:

In Auslan, Year 5 students are learning that some verbs can be signed in different ways to show how an action is performed. They are exploring how movement and expression can add meaning to signs, helping to communicate actions more clearly. Students are practising translating verbs accurately and building confidence in using Auslan to communicate effectively.

Social & Emotional Learning:

Next week, Year 5 students will be revisiting our school-wide expectations of Safety, Respect and Learning. They will explore what these values look like, sound like and feel like in different school settings while practising the routines that help create a positive learning environment at St Thomas the Apostle. Through discussions and classroom activities, students will develop a shared understanding of how their actions contribute to a safe, respectful and successful school community.
