Spotlight on Learning

We kicked off our learning this term with enthusiasm and curiosity, diving straight into engaging activities that captured students' interest from the very beginning. Starting with a bang has set a positive tone for the term, inspiring students to embrace new challenges and make the most of every learning opportunity.

Our first day of Term Three saw the Year 6 students have the wonderful opportunity to attend St Peter's Performing Arts Centre to watch Hadestown: Teen Edition. It was a thrilling experience to see a live theatrical production, with students captivated by the talented cast, impressive music, creative staging and powerful storytelling. Watching the performance brought many aspects of drama to life and helped students develop a deeper appreciation of the hard work, creativity and collaboration involved in producing a musical. It was an inspiring experience that will support our learning while creating lasting memories for everyone who attended.

Wednesday saw our Year 6 students enjoy an exciting and enriching excursion to the IMAX, the Melbourne Museum's Rome Exhibition, the Old Melbourne Gaol and the historic Courthouse. Students were immersed in a range of learning experiences that brought history, geography, religion and English to life. The Rome Exhibition deepened their understanding of Ancient Rome and its lasting influence, while the Old Melbourne Gaol and Courthouse provided fascinating insights into Australia's colonial history and the justice system. The IMAX experience added another dimension to the day, allowing students to engage with learning on a truly spectacular scale. It was a memorable excursion that encouraged curiosity, critical thinking and meaningful connections to classroom learning.

We look forward to another exciting term of learning, where students will continue to challenge themselves, build new skills and embrace every opportunity to grow academically, socially and spiritually.

Learning For Week 2:

Religious Education: This week, students will learn about the story of Pentecost and discover how the Holy Spirit's coming transformed the disciples and marked the beginning of the Church. They will explore why Pentecost is an important event in the Catholic faith, examine how the disciples were transformed by the Holy Spirit, and reflect on how they can live out the message of courage, faith, and service in their own lives.

English: Students will begin reading and exploring *Once* by Morris Gleitzman. Through class discussions and a range of reading and writing activities, they will analyse the characters, explore key themes, and identify the author's techniques. Students will develop their comprehension and critical thinking skills as they make connections, share their ideas, and support their responses with evidence from the text.

Mathematics: This week, students will learn how to represent fractions with different denominators on the same number line. They will explore equivalent fractions, showing that different fractions can have the same value. Students will also practise simplifying fractions by dividing both the numerator and denominator by the same number. Throughout the week, they will build confidence in using number lines to compare and accurately represent fractions.

Performing Arts: Students will examine how stories can be told from different perspectives. They will be looking into how different people viewed Ned Kelly. Was he a Hero, Rebel, Criminal or Victim? They will then transfer this understanding to a character from Hadestown as we begin to explore the inquiry question of How do our choices shape the story we leave behind?

Auslan: Students will learn how pronouns (such as I, you, he, and she) and prepositions (such as on, under, and next to) are communicated in Auslan using pointing signs. They will develop their understanding of how pointing can represent people, places and locations in Auslan, and practise translating and using these signs accurately in a range of simple conversations and activities.  

Social & Emotional Learning: Students will explore the importance of trusted adults and learn when and how to seek help if they feel unsafe, unsure, or need support. They will identify the qualities of trusted adults by describing how they behave, what they say, and how they make others feel, helping students build confidence in recognising safe and supportive relationships.  

What you can do to help your child at home

• Encourage your child to read for at least 20 minutes each day and discuss the characters, events and themes in their book.
• Practise maths skills through everyday activities such as cooking, shopping, measuring and working with fractions.

Important Reminders

• Fidget Toys

  We kindly ask that students do not bring fidget toys to school unless their use is a planned adjustment in consultation with Allied Health Professionals. Students who bring fidget toys without an approved adjustment will be asked to place them in their school bag for the remainder of the day to take home. We appreciate your support in encouraging your child to leave fidget toys at home.
