CELEBRATING FIRST NATIONS CULTURE 

Bond University Experience – Zeljko Strok, AIEF scholarship student.

During the first week of the Term 2 holidays, I departed for the Gold Coast courtesy of Bond University. The visit was designed as a few days experience of university life.

I consider myself to be very lucky and blessed to have this experience from the university. On the first day at Bond University our group was greeted with a formal Indigenous welcome by an Elder of the Gold Coast. We then toured around and viewed the largest collection of Indigenous artwork in Australia. 

During the following days we visited the campuses of Griffith University, UQ, and QUT. We learnt about overcoming problems and obstacles related to business and commerce that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders commonly face on a daily basis.

This trip not only opened my eyes to a possible university pathway, but also how Indigenous people can make a mark in the world and give back to mob, back to community, back to country and back to Australia. 

Special thanks to NIBS and Bond University for this opportunity, and I would recommend this trip for any First Nations students.
