Confraternity Rugby League

Saints First XIII Rugby League team competed in the Confraternity Rugby League carnival during the first week of the school holidays. We fielded a young team, with 15 students experiencing the competition for the first time. Our pool games were extremely tightly contested: a 14-point loss to Padua, before bouncing back with a 14-6 win against St Patrick's College Shorncliffe, then a 10-8 loss to Marymount College. We then unfortunately lost two tight games, 12-10 against Shalom College and 12-6  against St Peter Claver, with goal kicking again hurting us, before winning our final game against St Patrick’s College Shorncliffe 16-14 to secure 15th place. 

The team is to be commended on their efforts throughout the week. It's a great challenge to be a Division 1 Confraternity team, and they approached this well. A special congratulations goes to Nassar Foster, who was named on the bench in the QLD Boys Merit team. A big thank you to our staff — Mr Rix, Mr Will, Mr Gregory, Mr Connell and Mr Vant — for accompanying the team, and Mr Cramp for his work in preparing the team for the carnival. 

This term, our Cowboys Challenge and Aaron Payne Cup teams have had two tough results against St Patrick’s College and Mackay State High School. The take on local rivals Trinity Bay in the last round of the regular competition.  

CISSA – Saints CISSA

St Augustine's had another successful year in the CISSA competition, retaining our title as champion boys school and overall champion school (combined with St Monica's). This year we had four teams compete in the Grand Final: 

• AFL team won 99-12 against TBay – Matthew McCoy named Best on Ground 
• Basketball won 70-52 against Cairns SHS – Austin Ehlich, Player of the Final 
• Football won 4-2 against Cairns SHS – James McDonough, Player of the Final 

• Touch Football won 9-6 against Bentley Park College – Sam McNamara, Player of the Final

Mountain Biking

Congratulations to the combined Saints MTB team who won their third straight Townsville Interschool MTB race. Thank you to the community who support the team and make this event happen. FQ Futsal Titles 

U13s

The U13s had a strong start to their campaign, remaining undefeated in the pool stage. In two of their pool games the team maintained a clean sheet with scoring contributions coming from across the field. In their semi-final they played CSHS, winning the first half before unfortunately letting it slip in the second. The team will have a retrial at the end of the term to again strengthen the squad, before applying for a wildcard to the FNQ regional finals in Townsville later this year. 

U15s

Guided by the nuclear strike of Samuel Thirkell's left foot and the on-court team direction of Louie Lesic, the U15 futsal team progressed to the finals with humble dominance. The men of Saints were tested in the final by a Cairns High team that had almost double the players we did. Congratulation to the U15 team who qualified for the North Queensland competition in Townsville.

Opens

The Opens Futsal team showcased an impressive brand of futsal at the annual Football Queensland competition held at Redlynch Central Sports Stadium. The team recorded convincing victories over Trinity Anglican School and St Andrew’s Catholic College, while also earning a hard-fought draw against Mareeba State High School during the preliminary rounds.

Building on this strong form, the team defeated Bentley Park State High School in the semi-final to secure a place in the championship match. In a highly competitive final against a strong Cairns State High School side, the team narrowly went down 4–3 after an outstanding performance.

Their efforts throughout the tournament have been rewarded with qualification for the North Queensland Football Finals, to be held in Townsville in August. Congratulations to all players on their achievement, and we wish them every success in the next stage of the competition.
